Changing terminals Sydney Airport

I'll be flying into Sydney from Perth then continuing on to Christchurch. I'm completely unfamiliar with the airport. I'll arrive in Terminal 1, depart from Terminal 2.

Is this done easily? Can I just walk between the two or do I need to take a train/shuttle?

I'm arriving Virgin Australia, departing Air New Zealand. Same ticket, so I assume I can check my luggage directly through from Perth.

Any assistance appreciated.

Hi Mel,
No - the international & domestic terminals are about a 5 minute drive apart.

You can take the train from T2 to T1 ( International ) very easily. Just follow the signs on the arrivals level.

There may be a bus transfer included in your ticket - maybe check with Virgin.

The website tells me the Airport Link train takes 2 mins & costs $5.40.

10 cents & 8 minutes less than the bus.

Unless you're on an international from Perth to Syd, you'll be arriving T2, departing T1.

Train is pretty simple. Just double check that the trains are running on that line if it's the weekend. Weird I know but they closed the south coast Illawarra line on me weekend just gone... They do have rail replacement buses but just a bit of a hassle and I know they occasionally close sell the lines for work.

http://www.sydneytrains.info use the right hand box and enter domestic airport and international airport with date and time...

Leave it to Australia to charge for transport between terminals - incredible.

Thank you both.

There will be NO charge for the transfer between terminals for a Virgin to Air New Zealand connection, which will be done airside at Sydney airport. This information is available on the Virgin Australia website http://tinyurl.com/qdtdzof.
And yes people do pay for public transport in Australia.

Hi Melnq8,

I've always caught the free transfer bus at Sydney domestic airport over to the International terminal. I think it is near Gate 1 and goes every 15 minutes or so. I've never paid anything to do this. And yes, you should be able to get your bags ticketed all the way to Christchurch as long as it is the same carrier. I usually fly Qantas so can't say exactly what happens with Virgin but it would have to be similar. On the way back, you'd collect your bags at Customs and come through. I know with Qantas, there is signage directing you to the domestic transfer desk where you drop off your bags and then catch the bus. As before, I am sure there will be something similar with Virgin. Hope that helps.

Cheers

Thank you Mac123.

Back on the ground after my first Virgin Australia flights - very impressed.

I'll be connecting to Air NZ, but both flights are on the same ticket, so no worries about dealing with luggage.
