Anyone tried renting a car from a New Zealand car company as opposed to a US one like Avis, Hertz, Budget, etc? If so how was the experience and treatment and how was the car?

It's been a decade since I was in New Zealand, but we found a local NZ rental-car company from the classifieds in an Aussie motoring magazine. We had a seven-month old baby, and the guy (it was a one-man show) put in a baby seat for our use. He picked us up at the airport in his own car, and took us to the rental centre; when we returned the car he drove us back to the airport again. All of this at far less than the big-company rates. We couldn't have been happier. None of this is of much help to you, as his name and the name of his company are now lost in the mists of time, but I guess what I am trying to say is: find a small, local operator. It's not necessary to deal with the majors.The cars are just as good, and the service is friendly and personal. We took our own advice less than a year ago on our first trip to Perth, and had a similarly positive experience.

Hi, I'm renting a car from Apex and they seem nice on the internet. I'm leaving on March 19th and will get backto everyone. I've also contacted ARF but couldn't get in touch with Nova. Good luck. Alana

Apex is good-rented from them in Picton Feb 20 2004 for 5 days-$49NZ per day compared to $61NZ Thrifty etc. No problems!Car 1997 model but good condition-60,000 kms -well maintained.

I've had a good experience renting from Apex (as have many others in this forum).
However, to get a complete picture, do a search on this forum. There were a couple of people who weren't happy with Apex. While I don't agree with their reasons, you should at least read their comments.
