I'll do some more research in the archives, but I was wondering if anyone had the contact info for a good place to stay in Byron Bay. My wife and I don't need anything fancy just a nice, clean hotel, motel or moderately-priced B&B that's conveniently located to town.

There is a wide range of accommodation in and around "the bay" ...a lot of it overpriced

I assume you have a car..for mine

-for great location and good value see if you can get a cabin at Clarks beach or Broken Head caravan park

I'm reading JohnPilger's "A Secret Country" from the library. How do Australians respond to this former Aussie apparently esconsed now in Pom land?

We are about to buy our internal flights and look to be getting some good Red E prices. Thank goodness, w/ the drop in the OS dollar this trip is 15% more expensive than when we started planning.

If this decline keeps up you Aussies will be over here by the plane load buying Hawai'ian beachfront!

Thanks for the suggestions. We will have a car, but would prefer to be within walking distance of town so we can enjoy the pubs.

I think that my wife would prefer more of a traditional hotel/motel than a cabin at a carvan park.

Any other ideas? We're going the week before Xmas -- are we going to have a hard time finding availability?

(The lighthouse sounds kindof fun but I couldn't get the Web link to work.)

If you are going this xmas you better make arrangements pronto.You won't get up at the lighthouse.

There are only three pubs in town.

The "rails" is interesting,forget the "great northern" and the "beach hotel" is one of the best pubs in australia.The fish restaurant at the Beach is excellent although expensive.

Go to www.byron-bay.com and select the hotels/motels accommodation guide.
In terms of availability and cost you might try the wollongbar or dolphin.

Be careful to know the place is within walking distance of town/beach.If you have to drive then it opens up a range of other posibilities.

Get to the markets on Dec 21.

If you are driving up the coast from sydney try the smoky cape lighthouse B&B. do a search.

I was up at Byron a few weeks ago..took my am swim on a perfect clear sunny spring day.The profile of the Mt Warning shield volcano across byron bay was very reminescent of the view of Mauna Kea across Hilo bay from the rockpool where we took our swim over there.

But of course you will be up at Kakadon't...chasing a few sleepy crocs and elusive birds across endless swamps and pursued by every insect known to man.The folks at Byron will be enjoying the east coast roots and blues festival.

In terms of weather,geography and lifestyle, byron and hinterland matches any Hawai'ian beachfront.and to its eternal credit it ain't a condo jungle.

As for Pilger,like a lot of things in life,it depends on your perspective.My post modernist partner thinks he is an important provacateur in encouraging debate about aussie history and society. My opinion is best left unstated. But it surprises me his books aren't banned from libraries in Barry Goldwater country.

I guess you are also checking out virgin blue flights.That bush safari mob you mentioned looked interesting...great cruise around the torres strait.

There's no doubt ...by the time you get on that flight in "woop woop" new mexico you will know more about this place than 90% of aussies.

We were there once in 2000 & loved it. It really reminds us a lot of our Northern California hometown, Santa Cruz -- a mixture of surfer & "alternative" cultures.

It looks like we'll be missing you by a day. We're headed up to the Sunshine Coast for XMas.

How long should we expect the drive from Brisbane to Byron to take?

Santa Cruz is a good spot...maybe Byron is santa cruz minus 20 years.(perhaps the weather is a bit better as well...and the ocean temp a bit higher)

We have friends at Boulder Creek..do you know of it?

It is two hours (new freeway) from Brissy airport to Byron.Head south over the gateway bridge just near the airport.Lots Brissy types with $ and taste buying up real estate in the big scrub area these days.
