best chinese restaurant in Sydney

We will be visiting Sydney in the not too distant future.
I love Chinese food and I am looking for good Chinese restaurants - especially for yum cha (dim sum) and Peking duck.
Appreciate your help.

Golden Century in Chinatown is very good for seafood (they consistently win the best Chinese in Sydney award) and they also do a very good Peking duck. For modern Chinese, Billy Kwong's in Crown Street Surry Hills is excellent. For a Chinese vegan Yum Cha, Bodhi used to be very good, it's below Cook and Phillip Park.

There are also some excellent dim sum places in Ashfield, as well as Shanghai style food--Shanghai Night has really tasty pork and coriander dim sum.

Thanks for the tips - we will be there for several days so we will have a chance to sample them all (and then some, I hope).

You're welcome. As you have "chilli" in your screen name, I'll venture another suggestion, the Chinese-Malaysian restaurant in Hunter St, City. It's very low key and very cheap but it has one of the best laksas in Sydney for a mere $8. It's not far from Circular Quay and isn't open late, excellent for lunch if you are in the vicinity.

I second the Golden Century recommendation - there are some pics on our blog - boy I had forgotten about the outstanding hot and sour soup.....

Thank you all - I may have to extend my stay there!
Sydney is one of my favorite places to visit so it would not be too much of a sacrifice.

I can recommend New Marigold for yum cha in Chinatown. I found Billy Kwong disappointing. Best Malaysian would be Ginger and Spice in Cremorne or Temasek in Parramatta. I would pick Malaya in Cockle Bay over Chinta Ria.

I just at Shanghai Nights on Sunday Night - great dumplings but not a glamorous restaurant and a bit of a hike. We also love the Chinese Noodle Restaurant in Chinatown - a tiny hole in the wall but the best dumplings and noodles. I had a German au pair who used to sneak off in the car after we got home to gorge on them.

For a splurge Golden Century is the place.

There is also a new Taiwanese dumpling restaurant that has opened in World Square. Din Tai Fung
Their soup dumplings are to die for.

Sarvowinner,
thanks for the input.
It seems that everyone loves Golden Century - that will be the place where we'll start.

Not that this means a whole lot, but Golden Century has a rating of 7.1 among chinese restaurants in Sydney CBD & East Sydney - meaning that more than 25 chinese restaurants in that area alone have been ranked as better by mostly local people on eatability.com.au.
I know to take this with "a grain of salt" but still, I am surprised.
I guess I'll just have to judge for myself.

PS (Golden Century)
Granted the food itself is rated higher at 8.2 - I am sure it is very good if so many Fodorites recommend it.

In the suggestions for Yum Cha, you may want to look at The Regal and the East Ocean.

They are always packed, mainly with Chinese, are pretty good value and have a wide choice from the carts. The ratings for the evening meals do not inspire confidence, in either place.

I can't comment on eatability, but the broadsheet press (Sydney Morning Herald) as well as the SBS (the multicultural broadcaster) food guide consistently rates Gold Century highly. Order pippies with XO sauce and any of the fresh fish for the best experience of this restaurant.

Thank you Susan7 & Geordie;
I will try to remember to post after, though it won't be for over a year from now (I am just getting excited about our trip there). Planning trips is almost as much fun as traveling itself - though not quite.

It's a bi-valve mollusc, also called surf clams. I found this image of them, but if you do a google image search there are more appetising cooked versions:

Do pippies taste more like clams or more like mussels?

When we had them at Golden Century (pic on our blog above) I thought they were more clam like, and as we said on the blog, a little undercooked (chewy) - but I'd order it again for the sauce alone!
