>Those with the least anything (legs, looks, manners, style, ethics, morals, etc.) play Rugby League!

Yes you're right. AFL is quite feminine.

>My utter and complete ignorance of rules and tactics, and my total indifference to outcomes, makes me completely objective and the best possible recommender.

No what that means is that you don't know what you're talking about.

>>I didn't realise that in Australia people are allowed to make tv ads that tell complete and utter lies to the population<<

AZG, my apologies. I hadn't realised that you've just been released from the Trappist monastery you entered at the age of six. I'd like to explain the facts of life to you, but I don't know where to begin.

>>Yes you're right. AFL is quite feminine<<

If "legs, looks, manners, style, ethics, morals" are solely feminine characteristics, we're in trouble.

Neil, Do not tink I am siding wit the leprechaun

I do not tink the little fulla was actually trying to be derogatory on this.

I don’t tink the Irish are a nasty race at all, but some time tings just don’t come out the way they ment them to come out. Do ya get me drift Neil ??

I tink the little fulla was sayen dat !!! you know there’s nuting wrong with their morals, their legs, or their manners, its just a bit disappointing when these big tall sheilas dat call em selves AFL playes put their stockings and dresses on after de game and go home to their hubbys. We don’t tink the gals should be allowed to dress like men Neil.

Why don’t they just go back to hop scotch and leave the mens games to the RUGBY players. You know what I’m saying here Neil .

2b sure 2b sure.

Oh yeah? Well I bet no Australians have invented anything like this:

Peddle powered wheel chair
Fly screens for submarines
Ash trays for motorbikes
air-conditoning for motor bikes
the solar powered torch
the glass hamer
Door light for motorbikes
Powdered water
Dictionary index
Waterproof teabags
Injector seats for helicopters

Why am I getting the impression that this thread has moved into a parallel dimension?

AAFrequentFlyer, I think this discussion (if that's the word) has something to do with the fact that Aussie Rules and Rugby League players have distinctively different shapes. They're produced that way in secret breeding programs. AFL players tend to be tall and lithe, the better to engage in the balletic leaps the game is known for. ARL players are typically about 5 feet tall, 5 feet wide and have no necks or foreheads. Needless to say, they do not engage in balletic leaps, and the rules of the game (it seems to me) only require them to run a few paces at a time.

The result of all this is that, as both species of player is sexually extremely active and indiscriminate, the populations of New South Wales and Queensland are growing imperceptibly shorter and wider, and in several thousand years will have reverted to a hunter-gatherer lifestyle.

I disagree with a lot of you. If you watch AFL, turn the sound off and put on the ballet music of Swan Lake you will see how interesting the game is.
Personally I like the tight pants ( very like ballet ) and at least you can have a competition too and give each player a score of 1 -10 on the size of his crotch. This is really a fun game! Neil is right though about Rugby League it is for sex starved Neanderthals. No wonder Rugby Union is getting a bigger and bigger following.

Hi AAFrequentFlyer,

I like both the games. They are so different that any attempt at comparison is a waste of time. Given what you have said about being an NFL fan (Chicargo Bears) I think you would probably enjoy the Rugby League more than the afl. There are enough similarities (though not many!!) between the games that you will follow what is happening. The web site is www.nrl.com.au That will give you the dates etc so if you follow that and read a few match reviews and associated articles as the season gets started then you will have some context around what you watch in April.

On the other hand if you want to see a game that is played exclusively in Australia (except for ex pat leagues in various parts of the world) AFL is a terrific game and the Swans do have a diehard core of supporters. Don't expect to understand what is happening however. It would be an opportunity to see a unique game.

That website is www.afl.com.au Again that will give you scores, match reports etc. Good for context.

Enjoy
Ned

AFL is a unique game that just happens to look almost identical to Gaelic football.

If you can believe the fans, AFL was the worlds first formally codified football type game.

However, this doesn't take away from the fact that soccer was played in Roman times, Marn Grook was played by the aboriginies and i'm pretty sure you'll find Gaelic football was played before AFL was codefied too. Though I can't find any info online to back that up.

AFL just becomes a little boring when they have to stop the game and bring out the team manacurist.
