Australia: High Season? Shoulder Season? Low Season?

I've been a prolific Fodorite on the Europe board since late 1997. We're very excited to be in the very beginning stages of planning a trip to Australia (DH has visited several times through work; I have never been), so this is my first post on this section of the board. Will admit to "lurking" for a couple of weeks.

I'd like to know the dates that are generally considered high, shoulder, and low season there. I found the dates for the school holidays on the web, and we'll avoid those. We're considering mid-October,2006.

By the way, I won the trip: RT air on Qantas SF-Sydney, another RT flight Sydney-Melbourne, four nights in a hotel in Sydney, three nights in Melbourne. We'll definitely extend the trip, at our own expense. Soon I'm going to wake up and find out it's all a dream!

Mid October would be excellant. There is no high, low or whatever because there are different seasons around the country and whats high in one place could be low in another and as we don't have too many extremes it really is not too important - just as long as you miss the school holidays.

Winning was certainly a surprise! One of the SF television stations, KRON, was holding an "Australia Week" as part of its early morning programming. I just happened to be watching the first morning of the series when they announced the contest. Each day of the week the hosts announced a "secret" word that had to be typed into the subject line of an e-mail to the station. For example, the first morning the word was "koala," or a similar Australia-related word. I alerted DH and we both participated each of the five mornings, Monday thru Friday. At the end of the week, they announced my name as the winner of a trip for two (there was a another winner of a trip for two people also)! I understand there were 20K entries. I may resume breathing shortly!

We were in the car driving to Tahoe when I heard the news while listening to the program on my Walkman, which has a TV band. Since I was using earbuds, DH didn't hear the announcement and couldn't figure out why I was so excited. However, my streak of luck (my total stash for the trip was $25) didn't continue in the casino, but I didn't care because I felt as if I'd already won the jackpot.

Betsy,

Congratulations on winning the trip! That's so exciting and you are sure to have a wonderful time.

Might I ask where you found the school holidays in Australia on the web? I'm just starting to research for a planned trip and that will have some impact on where we go in Australia and when.

Don't worry, I'll research too, but thought since you had already found the holiday schedule I might save a few clicks in google.

Toucan, as I am not sure where you are planning to visit, these are the school holiday dates for NSW and if you want other states let us know if you don't find out first.

1. April 14 - April 30

2. July 1 - July 16

3. September 30 - October 15

4. December 22 - January 31

Thank you Peteralan. I took a break for dinner so haven't been searching yet. As you will see when I give you the dates, I'm not in a terrible rush We are going in November 2007. The dates are November 17th to December 8.

Duh. Now I feel stupid, I was looking on my Australia calendar for the dates and realized that the school holidays are listed not only on the months, but a comprehensive one at the back.

It looks like we will be okay in all areas.

We will spend a week in NSW, but will be staying with friends in Sydney as well as some time on their farm, so accommodations won't be an issue. We'll be a week up in the Daintree area, and probably a week outside of Brisbane. We'd like to visit Lamington again as well as explore possibly some new areas.

We've got to work on the order of the visits etc.

It's quite a ways out, but need to save up for it as well as brace my boss for my being out three weeks.

Thanks for your congratulations. We're quite excited. I'll be relying on the Oz experts on this board a lot in the coming months as we start to plan.

Toucan, I found the school holidays by typing "school holidays australia" into Google. You may have already discovered that by now.
