Atomic Travel Buses
We want to travel by bus from Queenstown to Greysmouth. Atomic is the only company that seems to have a direct route between the two towns. It is a backpacker bus. My husband and I are in our 50s and are concerned that this means is is a "no frills" type of transportation and might be uncomfortable for the long ride. Anyone have any experience with them? Thanks.

Give us a break, what makes you think that NZ is a third world country with buses like Mexico. They are as good if not far better than most of the N. American buses, and that includes Canada. If you want frills don't go on the bus but rent a car. The distance from Qt - Greymouth is not far anyway.
Try and be a tad subtle when you ask questions that are really patronising o/w you will get a flea in your ear

Hi again Jamie
You know that would be a really long trip - I started remembering after posting my other message to you - it took 8 hours from Queenstown to Fox Glacier and then another 5 hours from Fox up to Greymouth - the roads are very windy and narrow. The trip is very, very long. Have you possibly thought of (only a suggestion) of going back to Christchurch and taking the Tranzalpine train to Greymouth? That is a spectacular trip $87 NZ and well worth it. You may well have made your mind up but I thought I should forewsarn you of such a lengthy trip. Again, enjoy the experience is fantastic!!

I have utter contempt for anyone that verbally bashes someone on a forum such as this and especially when they hide behind a nom de plume. "here" needs to have a long hard look at him or herself.
If he/she takes this query as being patronising then he/she is far too thin-skinned.
The question that Jamie puts to the group is a legitimate one and deserves a decent answer not the rubbish "here" is handing out. I have lived in New Zealand for most of my life, and I for one, do not take exception from the question.
I do like the idea that Ellen puts forward.
Thank you Ellen and Rich,

Our plan is to spend 2 nights at Lake Brunner and then take the TranzAlpine to Christchurch. We had concerned going to Christchurch, taking the TranzAlpine to Lake Brunner and then returning to Christchurch via the TranzAlpine. By going from Queenstown to Greysmouth, we only need to spend 1 night in Christchurch as well as not doing a round-trip on the train. Atomic's schedule looks like a 10-hour ride. Still long but duable. Thanks for your suggestions.

Jamie - I'm sorry that you received such a ridiculously rude response - most people here are very helpful. A lot of very helpful people choose to not use real email addresses for very valid reasons, and most of them have the best of intentions. But inevitably the very rude ones use fake addresses.

Recently someone very rude has posted insulting messages, while claiming to be from New Zealand - perhaps he/she is (there can be jerks in any country, I suppose), but overall everyone we've met in our research (and through family friends in NZ) has been so helpful and friendly. You will have a wonderful time, I'm sure. Best of luck to you!
