Hi Pam,

Not sure how cheap you want to go in your accommodation, can you give me a rough guide as to what you want to spend per night?

Best way to get to Melbourne from Alice is via plane.

Must Do's - Well Ayres Rock and The Olgas of course. A west Macdonnell Ranges tour will take care of most of the interesting gorges you can usually do this in conjunction with a Palm Valley tour.

There are a lot of little things around Alice like the Old Telegraph Station, Anzac Hill, feeding the Rock Wallabies at the Heavytree Gap Motel at dusk.

I live in Alice but I am not associated with the tourism industry so I will not sugar coat what I say about things here.
If you want to know more just ask.

Cheers
Inexpensive places recommended in one of my Australian tourism resources include Elkira Motel, budget in the middle of business district. The other is the Red Centre Resort three miles from town and offers campsites, motel rooms and budget. A free shuttle runs into town.
www.gosmartravel.com

Hiya

the most direct way is by plane. Quantas fly from Melbourne a number of times a day. However I recommend The Ghan train. Its relaxing, stunning scenery and the food and service is excellent.

The only drawback is that the journey is 30 hours long, via Adelaide and Port Douglas, so go for a sleeper carriage if your budget allows
