Because of plane connections we find we will be in Christchurch for 3 days in mid May. Would appreciate any advice on what to see. We will not be renting a car, but would be willing to take other means of transportation to get to places. Thanks in advance.

Hagley Park in the centre of the city is well worth a visit as are the Museum, by the main gates to the park and the Arts Centre across the road in what was the University. there is also a new Art gallery in the area, but I haven?t had a chance to visit it.

The Antarctic Centre near the airport is very interesting and is unique to Christchurch.

Have you gone over Arthur's Pass? If not, I'd suggest taking the TranzAlpine train up to the Pass, have lunch and take a hike, then catch the returning train to CChurch. Great scenery and a fun trip!

In addition to Arthurs Pass, you could also:

Take an all-day tour to Kaikoura to go Whale watching. This is one of the few places in the world where you have a very good chance of seeing sperm whales.

Ride the Christchurch Gondola out of Port Hills. There are tours that take you to the Gondola, then go on to a Maori Hangi feast and dance performance. A bit 'touristy' to be sure, but still interesting and fun.

One place not yet mentioned is Akaroa. Very pleasant village about one and a quarter hours out of Christchurch. There is a coach service over there, Check with the visitors centre in the Square (Near the Catherdral, cant miss it).

Akaroa has pleasant eateries, there is a chance to go out swimming with dolphins from there and the local produce is very good.

I agree with the posting about the TranzAlpine train, but bear in mind that a round-trip will take the whole day. We did it earlier this month, but one-way only from Christchurch to Greymouth. It's a spectacular trip, however. One other comment - if you're looking for a good dinner house in Christchurch, for heaven's sake, stay away from Palazzo del Marinaio. We expected a good lobster (crayfish in NZ) dinner, but found it out of many specials, overpriced, no non-smoking section and poor service. Very disappointing.
