Yangtze Ten Days?

We were anticipating the ten day cruise from Shanghai to Chongqing next summer. Have read several posts here suggesting that the trip from Wuhan to Chongqing is enough. Are the excursions at Nanjing, Mt. Huangshan and Mt. Lushan not worthwhile? We are looking at the Victoria Line.

In my experience, the "eastward" stretch of the river can be skipped. It was just not interesting enough to justify the extra days. My sister-in-law, who just took the same cruise, felt the same way. The "westward" portion is absolutely incredible, though.

Joe, <BR>The stretch of the Yangtze between Chongqing and Wuhan is what you should see. East of Wuhan is relatively uninteresting. <BR>Ten days is too long for that cruise. If you start at Chongqing (heading downstream to Wuhan), the trip should only take about 3-4 days. The trip upstream is generally a day or two longer. <BR>We took the downstream cruise, and our captain anchored the ship overnight so that we started into the "three gorges" section of the river in the morning (we didn't miss any of the scenery by sailing during the night). <BR>I suggest that you get from Wuhan to Shanghai by some other means (we flew), and spend the extra time in Shanghai, with side trips (perhaps to Suzhou or Hangzhou).

Hi Joe, <BR>We did the Chongching to Wuhan Yangtze River Cruise aboard the Victoria Princess in October. This is must see part of the yangtze. I agree with the other posts, spend only 4 night on the river cruise and the extra time in Shanghai. Shanghai is beautiful and you will love it! We flew from Wuhan to Shanghai also, as it is at least 400 miles! I think you will be bored on the cruise ship for ten days--way too long! Have fun and enjoy the spectacular scenery!

Thanks for responses. Been to China before, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Suzhou, Wuxi, Bejing, Xian, Guilin, Hongkong and Macao. My question remains, are Nanjing, Mt.Huangshan, and Mt. Lushan worth seeing? Will go on to Yunnan Provence and Silk Road after Cruise. Appreciate your efforts to help.

The 3 spots that you mention are interesting and scenic. But here's my answer: <BR> <BR>Places that I WOULD travel all the way to China to seehanghai, Hangzhou, Suzhou, Wuxi, Beijing, Xian, Guilin, Hong Kong and Macao. <BR> <BR>Places that I WOULD NOT travel all the way to China to see: Nanjing, Mt. Huangshan and Mt. Lushan.

Joe, you have been to many primary tourist places in China. There is nothing wrong to visit the less popular places or have a relaxation time on a boat. Some China bound visitors are on limited time. They may want to maximize the visits using minmum time therefore would consider spending a few days on the boat is a waste of time. <BR> <BR>We live in Western Canada. We pay almost the same price flying to Caribbean, such as St. Martin, as flying to Beijing. When we go to Caribbean, I can sit on the beach doing nothing but my wife feels boring. When we take the cross atlantic cruise, we only see water everyday. Why not take the Yangtze cruise for 10 days? <BR> <BR>We have never been to Nanjing. There is a mausoleum of Dr. Sun Yat-Sen. The mountain has YuHua (RainFlower) stones, the polished marble size colourful stones which you can find in Chinatown shops. The less famous are the Ming Tomb, the observatory, museum, pagodas, temples and mosque. take a look: <BR>http://www.seu.edu.cn/EC/english/jsnj.htm <BR>http://web3.asia1.com.sg/tnp/journey...a/ecnjing.html <BR> <BR>Huangshan is famous for the cloud. Many artists stay there for days just to capture the insperation. Lushan serves as a summer retreat for the heads of states. Yunnan (Kunmin, the capital city) is famous for the spring like weather and flowers. The nearby stone forest is unique in the world. If you are thinking of Silk Road, you are way ahead of me.

Dear Margaret and Stuart White: <BR> <BR>From your business perspective, 10 day cruise could be too long. Why would I pay an escort on a cruise ship anyway. <BR> <BR>If I have a choice, I'd spend 10 days on a cruise ship, on a beach, or in a chalet than spending 10 days in my office, in my couch, or in bed.

you must not by pass Huangshen, if you want to see a live Chinese painting this is the place besides everyday the picutre changes at the same location. Get a very good guide who can explain all the details regarding the each view. three nights is enough there, but go 4 different seasons is better. Bring some instant noodle, they give you boiling hot water to drink in a thermos. the food is not great or too fresh(especially during the summer months)except the veggie. You know they have to lug all the personal comforts by man power while the tourist take the gondola up. Rose
