Kathie, yes, that's exactly what it was like. Dozens of people in complete tropical darkness, with vendors sidling up and whispering things like "watch, cocacola, squid." Now I'd probably go for the squid, but at the time it was extremely bewildering.

WHO: Old boyfriend and me
WHAT: Independant wandering
WHEN: 1972-3
WHERE: Eventually India and Sri Lanka, by way of Paris, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan
WHY: My boyfriend wanted to take his mother to Paris. I was young and untraveled, so I sold my VW and went with him. After she returned home, he wanted to end up on the Riviera, but that winter it was snowing in the South of France, so we decided to follow some friends eastward. Got to Istanbul and figured we'd find our way to India somehow. A bus owned by some Swiss guys was going as far Kabul so we got on. After several breakdowns and 8 days in Kabul with the police raiding our hotel, the drivers decided to continue to India and on we went.
WHAT: Independant wandering

WHY: My boyfriend wanted to take his mother to Paris. I was young and untraveled, so I sold my VW and went with him. Went solo for 3 weeks/ Did all of my own planning/ 1998/ L.A.-Singapore-Bali-Singapore-Changmai-Bangkok-L.A.
I used to regularly watch the Martin Yan(sp?) TV show, "Yan Can Cook And So Can You". He'd travel around S.E. Asia and cook. And would also cook in his studio.
I was also influenced by Thai, Tommy Tang who opened his restaurant here in L.A. many decades ago.
On one of the Martin Yan shows, that he did in Singapore, I was hooked and picked up the phone and bought a plane ticket. I also added Bali into the trip since my best friend started going there regularly in the mid 90s and loved it. As for Thailand, I've been surrounded by Thais for many decades here in L.A., so the interest was already there.
I had been traveling solo and doing Europe annually since I was a teen in the early 70s, Africa since the early 80s, and New Zealand and Australia in the mid 90s, so I needed a change of pace. I was instantly hooked on S.E. Asia. Happy Travels!
