Where to stay in Japan

Planning a trip to Japan in late August of 2025. I am taking a 12-night cruise out of Osanbashi (The name/or the location of the pier) with Celebrity Cruises. Was planning to stay eight days in Yokohama because it is closer to the cruise pier. Is staying in Yokohama a good choice? Would I be able to access other towns and cities such as Toyko and everything in between if I decided to stay in Yokohama using the trains, metro, buses, etc.?
Comments and ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Ōsanbashi Pier is the main international passenger pier at the Port of Yokohama, located in Naka Ward, Yokohama, Japan. Ōsanbashi is the oldest pier in Yokohama, originally constructed between 1889 and 1896.Wikipedia

Yokohama has attractions that would be good for a few days (2 or 3). Kamakura, Hakone, and Izu Peninsula are nearby You can get better hotel prices in Yokohama than in Tokyo, but the trade-off is that it takes a good bit more time to go from there to the more interesting sites in Tokyo. You can use Shin Yokohama to get the shinkansen to points south and west, like Kyoto.

My understanding is that cruisers are heavy travelers, so maybe you are concerned about luggage. Japan has a brilliant luggage delivery service. Ship stuff between hotels or the airport. Hotels often will store luggage for days. There are coin lockers at railway stations. In addition to a travel plan for Japan it is a good idea to have a luggage plan.

You could, for example, get off the ship and send luggage you don't need to the airport take one bag with you for what you need in Japan. Maybe send a bag ahead of you to Kyoto.

If you wanted to plop down in one place for the 8 days, then you would be better off doing that in Tokyo than in Yokohama, imo.

Yokohama has about a days worth of stuff including the Ramen museum and China town and is more convenient for a visit to Izu but otherwise it’s maybe an hour by train to central Tokyo. I don’t know where you are from but it would be like exploring New York City from Newark. A waste of maybe 2 hours each day.

I agree about staying in Tokyo, unless there are specific things you want to do and see in Yokohama, a nice enough city. Takyubin will take care of any luggage issues and Tokyo is a 20 minute Shinkansen or one hour train ride from Yokohama so easily reached for your 8 day stay. Day trips to surrounding areas such as Hakone, Kamakura, Sawara, Kawagoe, Mt. Takao, etc., are easily arranged.

I love Yokohama. But I haven't stayed there more than three nights at a time. Whether that's a good decision is up to you. It's super easy and quick to travel between Yokohama and Tokyo.

In and around Yokohama, I loved going to Ta Ya Cave, a cave dug out by monks at a temple. Not a show cave. Hardly anyone else will be there. You get a small candle and a paddle to hold the candle in front of you, and there are stations within the cave to get more candles as you go. A very exotic and wonderful experience. I planned on going there and also took a mini-flashlight.

I also adore Sea Paradise, a vast and impressive aquarium complex with a few amusement park rides. Stunning. And a uniquely Japanese combination of experiences.

I have been several times to the Tokyo Ramen Museum, which is a two-story recreation of a Tokyo street scene from the Showa Period. It is dazzling. The museum is basically an excuse to eat ramen. Seven ramen masters from all over Japan ply their trade here, plus you can order mini-bowls so you can more easily try different ramens.

I did all three of the above in one very long day in Yokohama. On my birthday. It was the best birthday of my life.

Trying to make sense of where to stay and luggage

Thank you for your insights and advice. The main purpose of staying in Yokohama was due to the proximity to the cruise pier. I will be getting on a 12-night cruise after my stay at the hotel, however after considering the time spent on traveling to and from Yokohama I rather stay in Tokyo. I would need to stay in a hotel close to the train station and look around for something in the range of 1600 to 2000 U.S. dollars for eight nights. Any suggestions will be gladly appreciated. As far as the luggage I have always traveled with a regular 29-inch suitcase and a carry-on, my wife travels with a 27" inch. I have included a picture please provide feedback. Thank you.

You can always arrange your suitcases to be sent to the next hotel rather than lugging them around. If you're staying in Tokyo, look at getting a JR pass that can be used inside Tokyo and some day trips because 8 nights in one spot is a lot of time. We stayed at the Blossom Hibiya in the "quiet" part of Tokyo and near the shimbashi station (served by JR).
