we prefer the river too, but prices are higher, but its worth it..
chatrium riverside, anantara riverside, peninsula, royal orchid Sheraton, shangra-la, Hilton, ibus (cheapest).
in town there are so many hotels: Marriott courtyard, renaissance, four seasons, majestic grand (cheaper), Marriott mayfair, hyatt, plaza anthanee, and many many lower priced places..

By the river, definitely! Have been to BKK 4 times, stayed twice at the Sheraton Royal Orchid, once at a Marriott on the river that had a boat shuttle that takes you to a sky train station & another time at the Sofitel which is a very nice hotel, less expensive as it is not near the river.

For a first trip, it really is nice to stay by the river. I prefer hotels out on Sukhumvit these days, mainly because I have limited time and specific things to do out there. Either way- River or town- I like to be right near a skytrain station.

My preference is the Sukhumvit Road area. There are many things you can walk to in your free time. Many good restaurants too. You also have use of the city rail system (BTS.) Hotels in all price ranges too! Some other areas are a little dull after 9 PM - Sukhumvit (Nana - Asok) still has many visitors up and about on the main streets even at 1 or 2 AM. Good people watching from some of the cheap side walk cafes.
If you were in Bangkok longer you could stay in two different areas for variety in things you can walk to.
Have fun.
