I stayed at the Bangkok Holiday Inn Ploenchit. It is directly in front of the skytrain station (along what most of us call Sukhumvit Road). There are pictures of my room on my web site if you are interested. I've never stayed at Holiday Inn Silom, and I have no idea how handy it is to skytrain. Probably not as handy as the BB Holiday Inn Ploenchit. It was ideal!

the new holiday inn on plenochit, called the bangkok holiday inn is superior and better located than any of the others that you have mentioned....and the skytrain is right out front....my choice...
HI silom is ok but old and not all that close to the skytrain, but it is decently located and certainly much nicer than the asia hotel which is ancient and dark and dreary...

The Holiday Inn on Silom is a ten minute walk to the skytrain. At night there are few people between the skytrain and Silom Rd. which be uncomfortable.
The buffet breakfast is extensive with Indian, Chinese, Japanese and Western style foods.

There are large number of hotels in Bangkok. You can see this list, there are sorting by price, http://www.hotelsguru.com/thailand-b...ce-hotels.html
It depends which location you choose, the shopping area, I would suggest for Sukhumvit Area, that you can use Skytrain and enjoy shopping street, there are number of large shopping complex like Central World, Siam Paragon, Siam Center, Emporium, etc.
If you like Nightlife, you might enjoy staying closer to Ratchadapisek Road, there are large number of entertainment complex.

For an extra $40-$45/night, since it is only 2 nights, you can get a very nice 4+star hotel that is almost luxury furnished for relaxing, well situated and generally a very well trained conceirge desk to help you maximize your 2 days in BK.

Hi Judo - My husband and I stayed at the Holiday Inn Silom this past April and we absolutely loved it. The rooms were very comfortable and large. Very clean. The breakfast was AMAZING. They had Thai food (orcourse), American, Indian, Chinese, Italian - you name it. It was buffet style so you could try it all. The receptionist and hotel staff were very helpful and friendly. In the US - Holiday Inn's are not considered so great - but in Thailand this is one of the nicest hotels in Bangkok - as told by our local Thai travel guide.
It was situated in a nice location and was in walking distance to the night market and many nice restaurants. Tuk Tuks (taxi) were abundant and reasonable as well.
I would most definitely stay there again and highly highly recommend it.

i have to say that it is really stretching it to call HI silom one of the best hotels in bkk....
most people would rate it at 60% i think....its location is ok but not fabulous....too far from the skytrain...
we found the front desk staff to be totally disorganized...

I guess everyone's has different experiences with each hotel.
We stayed in various hotels all over northern Thailand including chiang mai, chiang rai, sukhothai, lampang, phitsanulok, and others and found that this holiday inn was the best out of all of them..comparatively.
As for the location - since we walked, took tuk tuks and had a private driver one of the days, we really didn't feel like it was a bad location or felt like we missed being close to the skytrains.
As for the front desk, compared to other hotels - this was the only one where they actually spoke english well and were polite. They were able to help us with excursions and recommendations of where to eat, shop, etc.
I am sure there are more luxurious hotels - I cant comment on those since we didnt stay there. I know we were happy with holiday inn silom and would recommend it.
