I'm happy, like "Sam" always seems to be. She also loves to shop (or so it seems). Rick looks too much like a tourist, so I'm surely not like him. Anthony is my favorite; he goes with the flow, as I also do. But he and Andrew are much more adventurous with their choice of meals than I could ever be (food allergies). I guess I'm most like Sam... ? The only thing is, she over prepares. I would rather plan by the seat of the pants... or by which ever way the wind blows... lol.

Craig, I also only watch Fox.. and travel channels... I follow the Cubs but don't watch games. GO CUBS!! My dear mother is probably watching them from on high.
Pssst... don't go over to the lounge and tell THEM that you only watch Fox!!! You'll get flamed unmercifully.
Bill.. I too like the lux hotels, like Samantha.

I think I am a cross between Samantha Brown and Anthony Bourdain.
I always search out the "foodie" stuff (markets, shops, restaurants), but I like to mix in the typical sightseeing as well.
I can only aspire to be as snarky as Bourdain in my writing. ;-)

For those of you that do not know of these folks here is a quick portrait;
1) Samantha Brown- in her 30’s she likes to travel the world in style. She has her show on the Travel Channel. Stays in nice 4/5 star places, is somewhat adventurous. Appreciates the finer things in travel, good food but nothing bizarre. Will visit museums and other sights but would not spend 7 solid days walking thru Angkor Wat. Appreciates a modern bathroom with all the amenities.
2) Rick Steves- in his 40’s and only does Europe. Likes pensions and small boutique hotels run by locals. Packs only one bag- a small one at that (this would explain why the wife never travels with him- imagine telling your wife that she can only pack one bag that she carries on her back!). He does provide some good info about the countries he visits and he likes a good glass of beer or wine. Eats with the locals but nothing too bizarre.
Will not venture beyond Europe so his shows tend to be somewhat repetitive over time.
3) Anthony Bourdain- in his 50’s? His show is “No Reservations” on the Travel Channel.
He is a maverick- he drinks, he smokes and tells it like it is – no holding back. Likes to eat a lot of different foods (he is a chef) but not quite as bad as Andrew Zimmern. He likes to mix with the locals and really get close to the culture. You won’t find him in 5 star hotels but he is comfortable on a mat with mosquito netting around him! He does not spend a lot on his wardrobe and it shows.
40 Andrew Zimmern- 40’s guy whose show on the travel Channel is “Bizarre Foods” and they are not kidding. This guy goes all over the world looking for the strangest things you never think of eating. He also does not spend much on his wardrobe. There are not many things that he cannot eat- but one that I remember that he could not stomach – the Durian! He met his match with that fruit. Funny and entertaining.

I believe there are some contradictions in your reply. Some of these people plan meticulously and others go by the seat of their pants so to speak and yes we would all like to travel instead of watching travel shows that goes without saying!

Your question is answerable now that you've described each of the four.
I'm 3/4 Samantha and 1/4 Rick.
P.S. Can't stick to your diet? Watch Bizarre Foods. It's so gross, you won't feel like eating for 3 days. This guy could put exterminators out of business with what he eats.

1) Samantha Brown
Yech. Too perky. I am in my 30s, tho.
2) Rick Steves
Yech. Too dorky. I do prefer budget and/or boutique hotels, tho.
3) Anthony Bourdain
Totally. Cynical (I prefer realistic), love to soak up culture (drink with the locals), sarcastic, and truly enjoy trying new things, as far as food and travel goes.
4) Andrew Zimmern
Meh. You can eat all the bugs you want, you're still kinda vanilla.

I hope I'm not like Anthony. I've only watched him twice, and though his style is amusing as an entertainer, he acted like a dumb tourist. He clearly had no knowledge of the culture he was visiting, and consequently made some awfully rude/ignorant remarks. Even if I'm onlly passing through a country, I try to learn a little about it, rather thatn spouting stereotypes.
However, I've only seen his Singapore and Hawaii shows, so I may be wrong.
I haven't seen Samantha in a long time, but I did like that she actually showed her excitement instead of acting oh-so-cool!

1) Samantha Brown
Probably closest to her, but she never strays off too far from the tourist track.
2) Rick Steves
A little too "budget" for me, but that's his gig, right? Have gotten a few good ideas from him though.
3) Anthony Bourdain
Funny to watch and at least he tries new things, but I'd get kicked out if I acted like he does. He's got cooking cred though!
4) Andrew Zimmern
Gotta respect a guy who eats grubs, brains, guts and whatever else he can find, but I prefer that my dinner is not still wiggling.
And now for a new topic, what kind of show (or show host) would you LIKE to see on The Travel Channel?
