Hi

It has been a few years since I went to Samui. But at the time we stayed at the southern tip on the Chaweng beach and that was nice. It was quiet but it didn't take us many minutes to get over to the main street. But I guess things might have changed a lot since I was there Here is a trip report from back then: http://gardkarlsen.com/thailand.htm

Regards

It is an island for relaxation with nice beaches, many calm areas to swim and a few decent restaurants. If you are under 40 their was a social scene in several of the larger tourist downtown areas.
It is an excellent jumping off point for a 1 day outing in the Speed Boat NOT the BIG SHIP to Koh Tao for excellent snorkeling.

Hi,

The Island is only very small so wherever you stay you wont be far from where the action is.

Chengwai is the place to go for bars etc but even it is quite small.

For somewhere quiet and low key and still relatively close to the action I'd recommend Bophut on the northern part of the island.

Whilst Chengwai is the most busy side of the island (on the eastern side) its also the cheapest in terms of quality of accomodation.

I went to Ko Samui last January with eight 28 year old friends. We stayed in the middle of Chaweng Beach. The beach, which was fairly quiet despite being high season, was on one side of the hotel. Tons of shops, restaurants, bars etc were on the other side. Very easy to walk from place to place. When I did my research, some of the other beaches might have been quieter but you had to take a cab to get to "the strip" so to speak. We didn't find our beach to be a raucous party by any means though. Lots of couples, some families etc. We loved the location.

I stayed at the northern end of Chaweng Beach at a gorgeous place called Baan Haad Ngam.

Lazing about in their beautiful infinity pool, you could see right down the length of Chaweng Beach, whilst being slightly away from all the action.

We often walked down Chaweng Beach to check out all the happenings, especially at sunset to have a meal or a drink or 2 at one of the many beachside offerings that dot the coast.

The walk into town was a short 5-10 min stroll, but we hired scooters and this proved to be the best way to get around on the island at your own leisure, and oh so much fun!
