I think you should spend just 2 days in Hoi An, it's long enough for you to explore every corner of the ancient city. Then, you can use the other days to travel some destinations in central region of Vietnam such as Danang or Hue

Danang is a big economic city with no interest except the small Cham Museum and Huê is a completely different thing, a large historic and cultural city with a lot to visit and consequently demands a MINIMUM of 2 full days. Ho An, 34 km south of Danang, is extremely charming and definitely deserve more than 2 days; 3 FULL days minimum including one for the superb Cham temples of My Son.!

Thank you everyone!

Hi Everyone,

Thank you so much for all of the thoughtful answers - even though it did spark some heated debate. Not my intent everyone - sorry! So here is what I have booked for my family:

1) Hanoi (3 nights)
2) Private Transfer to Pu Luong (2 nights)
3) Ninh Binh (2 nights)
4) Travel Back to Hanoi - Fly to Hue (2 nights)
5) Private transfer Hue - Hoi An (Stopping along the way at various points of interest)
6) Hoi An (4 nights) - with plans to visit Da Nang as well

7) Fly to Krabi, Thailand
8) Railay Beach (4 nights)
9) Khao Sok National Park (2 nights)
10) Khao Lak (4 nights)
11) Fly Phuket - Home

We have chosen to forego the southern part of Vietnam and focus on the north and central parts of the country. I have also decided to remove Halong Bay from my Itinerary. I know that people feel strongly either way, but I just don't feel drawn to it. between Phong Nga, Thailand, Ninh Binh and Khoa Sok National Park, I believe I will be getting my limestone Karst fix throughout this trip. Thank you again to everyone who chimed in! We are very much looking forward to this adventure.

Vietnam program perfect !

Hotels recommended in Hanoi : Especen in 2 stars, Serenity Villa in 3 and La Siesta in 4, all in Old Hanoi near Hoan Kiem Lake.

For 2 and 3, I can arrange for you the car, SUV Mitsubishi 7 seats with excellent English-speaking driver.. I just need your full name and date of arrival in Hanoi to reserve the Ban Hien homestay house and Chez Loan in Tam Coc . I am NOT working for an agency, I just do that to help you and my friend driver.
