Ubud: Chedi Club, Komaneka at Tanggayuda or Uma Ubud?

Hi,
Am having trouble narrowing down our choice in Ubud. First time to Bali, so will want to explore the area as well as relaxing at the hotel. Would prefer a great view of the rice paddies ,great food with the option of going out to other places for dinner, and casual luxury, Bali-style. We'll be there in early May.
Your thoughts are most welcome!

in may i will be at the alam shanti in the gangga room....this small place offers all that you desire, except they do not have a restaurant....you are a 10 minute or less car ride (free transport) to monkey forrest road and center ubud with all its wonderful restaurants and shops...

If you want rice paddie or river gorge views make sure you ask specifically about it. We just stayed at Kayumanis and only a few of the villas really had views and they were the multibedroom villas most just looked at the walls surrounding the villa. Just make sure if that is what you want.

I stayed at the Komaneka a few years ago, and I think all of the villas had beautiful views across a narrow gorge to terraced rice fields. You have to take a van from there into Ubud, but they have a regularly scheduled free service.

The Uma is more of a minimalist/Zen style for their interior design something which I don't think is really "Bali-style" but more chic. The exterior of the villas and rooms are Balinese style and the overall theme is Balinese. The pool villa suite does have good river and paddy field view.

The location is withing a short walk to the outskirt area of Ubud where there is the Mosaic restaurants and lots of art galleries.

If your budget is unlimited then consider the Como Shambala(same owner as the Uma), the Four Seasons and the Aman.

Barefoot, I’ve visited all three properties and I can give you my impression but I’ve never actually stayed at any of them.

Uma Ubud is on the edge of Ubud proper, easily walkable to the center of town. It’s on a somewhat small plot of land and is therefore a bit compact. The rooms are minimalist and very fresh. Some have lowkey views. The restaurant is really good. Uma, like its sister property Como Shamhala, offers a lot in the way of wellness activities. You’re also encouraged to use the Como spa facilities. Attracts a chic European and Singaporean clientele.

The Chedi Club is outside of Ubud, but in level rice paddies, not on a river valley. It was originally the estate of a wealthy Indonesian family and was taken over and renovated by the GHM group who also run the Legian. They’ve poured a lot of money and energy into it. It’s beautifully landscaped with a big pool and a lovely open air restaurant, but the original villa architecture is fairly uninspired. The new manager is extremely eager and enthusiastic. I’m sure the service and food would be excellent.

The Komen Tanggayuda is outside of Ubud in the other direction. I would say that it’s down a notch from the Uma and Chedi in exclusivity and design but is nicely situated on a pleasant green valley. The family that owns it are well connected in Ubud art culture and I’m sure they’d provide a warm and hospitable environment, but I wouldn't put it in the luxury category.

Thank you all for your great responses. I'm leaning toward the Uma Ubud, although it doesn't sound like it has great views. I just don't really like the look of the Chedi villas, and the Komenaka may be too far out, and you've all said, not as luxurious. I do not want to spend the money for the Four Seasons, Aman or Como Shambala. Thanks again...and any more suggestions are welcome!
