Train Travel in India Indrail vs booking as you go

Hey everyone,

I am planning my first 2.5 month trip to india. (see other post) and I wanted to know if I should get the indrail pass (seems expensive) or book as I go. What is the best option?

It is better that you book as you go.Also there is a quota for foreigners and so you can opt for this type ofreservation too. But one suggestion:
WHEN is your travel within India? If you wish to travel during months of May and early June, then it would be difficult to get reservation tickets as most families take vacation during this time.
So advance reservations(atleast 40days) are a must.

'Book as you go'is not advisable as its peak holiday season and most trains are full up.An Indrail pass, even though expensive, will give you a fix travel schedule.Minus the bother of reservations you travel in peace and focus more on enjoying the country.

i used an Indrail pass, with reservations. But naturally, on a 2.5 month trip, I changed my mind about some of them and redid the reservations on the road. If you want to change/reserve in India, try to do it in Kolkata, Delhi or Mumbai. Otherwise you may want to get a local travel agent to do it for you, as it can take a long time, especially in holiday season!

What class Indrail pass are you looking at? I thought 2AC was fine, and it's half the price of 1AC.
