Tickets booked, but blank slate for Southern India trip -- itinerary suggestions needed
Last December we had a wonderful trip in Rajasthan. We are keen to experience southern India this time, so we have arranged airline tickets into/out of Mumbai for this coming December. We have 13 days to explore and would love suggestions for an itinerary in southern India (we will fly on from Mumbai -- just using that as an international gateway).
Our goal is to develop an itinerary that combines seeing historical and spiritual sights with R&R, at a pace that is not too hectic. We would like to stay in top hotels on the trip. We can fly between locations or arrange car/driver as recommended.
We would be most grateful for suggestions of possible itineraries, great hotels, etc... Our thanks in advance for the help in planning our trip!

From Mumbai fly to Bangalore, stay at the Taj West End, overnight to Mysore, then if you like forests Kabini Jungle Lodge, then on to Kerala - Periyar, Kumarokam, Cochin - www.cghearth.com has the best hotels. Take a look at www.neemranahotels.com if combining Pnidicherry interests you.

Hobbes - Many thanks for the suggested itinerary. Did you take this route via car? How many nights would you recommend in each place? Are there "don't miss" hotels for you in these areas?

I have done much of this but not as a single itinerary. what I would suggest is 2 nights in Bangalore, 1 night in Mysore, from Coimbatore pick up your car, to Munnar for 2/3 nights, then to Periyar for 2/3 nights then Kumarokam 3 nights then to Cochin for 2 nights. cghearth is some of ym fav properties. In Kumarokam Coconut Lagoon. in Periyar Spice Village. In Cochin look at Brunton Boatyard or one of Sawdya's special properties. If you add Wayanaad take a look at Plantation Hideaway, www.plantationhodeaway.com. In Munnarthe High Range Club is old world colonial charm.
