Ticket Prices in CHINA?!?!?

I will be traveling in China in September and recently went online to see about pricing for the middle part of my trip. I have heard that it is cheaper to wait to book flights within China until I actually arrive in China, however I am worried that I either the flight will be booked or it isn’t actually cheaper.

I have done some online searching and found these prices…

Guilin to Bejing $273.00
Bejing to Shenzen $240.00
Bejing to Hong Kong $740.00

Can I find cheaper and open flights if I wait??? ANY info will be greatly appreciated!

Yes, I think you should have no problem finding fares on those routes. And you should be able to save at leat half. Perhaps up to 60-70% off those prices if you buy after you get there.

I wish I knew the answer to this since I need to obtain a ticket from HK to Beijing in mid-October. However, in researching, I have found many carriers (Air China Ltd., Hong Kong Dragon, Cathay) who fly between the two cities for $380 - in coach. The first two carriers offer what appears to be close to shuttle service so there's a good chance that rates are lower there. If anyone can give more specific info regarding purchasing intra-China (or HK/China) tickets less expensively, it would be most appreciated.

Try elong.com, one of the largest China-based online agent.

I put in some random date later in August for PEK-HKG. One-way fare is as low as 960RMB (~$120).

For KWL-PEK, I found some 60% fares there, which comes to 720RMB (~$90).

For PEK-SZX, I can only find 30% off fares there - 1,230RMB. (~$150) One can probably get it cheaper locally. But with PEK-HKG that cheap, no need to fly to Shenzhen.

As a chinese, I can answer the question. The price in your post is miles too high. I just checked ctrip.com, another Chinese expedia copy besides elong.com, it says one way RMB1250(USD155). And it has some deep discounts filght ticket in local newspapers (if you can read Chinese). Try some local travel angents.

I just flew last weekend roundtrip from Shanghai to Beijing, on Shanghai Air, for $220USD. I booked tickets on Thursday for a flight Saturday morning, for 3 of us, with no issues. The prices are very reasonable once you are in the country and work with a local travel agent.
