Things I shouldn't miss while 5 days in Hong Kong?

Several women friends will be leaving for Hong Kong on May 24 for a 5 day visit. With such a short time there, we could use an experienced persons suggestions on what to see and do. Any suggestions on cultural/historical sites and shopping would be appreciated? How about a day trip to Macau - is it worth it? Thanks ....

Wanda:

Five things not to miss while in HK:

1. Victoria Peak
2. Rides on the Star ferry
3. Lama Island
4. Shopping in Kowloon
5. Stanley Market

Pick up a copy of Fodor's City Pack Hong Kong. There are very good suggestions as to what you can see and do while in HK. I was there last summer and had a wonderful time. Make sure to count your change ($) after making purchases. If there are any specific questions i can answer for you, drop me an e-mail. Have fun on your trip! De

cultural/historical sights:
1. Wong Tai Sin Temple - right on the green line of the MTR.
2. Birds park - close to Prince Edward MTR (exit B1), open 7am to 8pm, built in traditional Chinese style, reportedly has more than 10 bird shops.
3. Tung Chung, Lantau Island - has a little fort with cannons dated back to the Ching dynasty (before 1911)

www.12hk.com

Wanda had good suggestions. Don't go to the peak on the weekend. I went on a Friday and thought it was fabulous, so made my husband go the next day, thought it was horrid! A good time to go is late afternoon and have dinner in the restraunt for sunset.
Since you are with a group of women you might enjoy a visit to Marianne's jewelry on Hankow road in Kowloon. The Kowloon park is fun to walk through, beautiful.
I always enjoyed shopping at Prince Edward market for clothes, but it is hit and miss. It is on Kowloon side.
You asked about Macau, I would not make a day trip there with only five days. Unless you are interested in the casinos. There is more than enough to see in Hong Kong in that time.
Shopping on Hollywood Road is fun, a bit pricey but you see beautiful items.

The night market on Temple st.--parallel to Nathan Rd on the Kowloon side and Stanley shopping (far side of HK Island--take bus 66 if my memory serves--riding the double deckers and the subway is another fine suggestion.
