But seriously folks...I agree with rhk. No better or worse than other third world countries. Mexican cities often smell much worse to me because of raw sewage.I used to hate the smell of cilantro, so also found big Mexican markets stinky. (Not anymore.)I can't stand incense, so there goes Asia. In India, there are fabulous smells (fresh mangoes in season), and lousy ones. Depends on who/where you are. The tour will probably be smell free, if you don't count the others on the bus.

cali, i believe you are wrong. the dog did not post to say stick a finger up her nose, i thought he said to plug her nose, not saying to plug it with her finger. correct?

btw, what did the subsequent post say that got deleted by our ever diligent censors.

I can't see why the suggestion to the OP to have his wife "plug her nose" is being branded as obnoxious. Far from it. It is actually quite practical and constructive.

It gets right to the root of the issue. What else can he do apart from cancel the trip,or leave her holed up in 5 star hotels?

It is all well and good for us to tell him that it is not that bad, but we are not the ones with nasal sensitivity issues.

Rhardy, source as many nostril plugs as you can carry, and have them infused with rosewater and patchouli.

India is intense in every sense, sight, smell, hearing, touch. One of the most intense, amazing places we have ever been to, the whole family fell in love with India.

On second thought, it is not unreasonable to suggest someone plug their nose (with whatever is available).
People are frequently given the advice to carry immodium to India, for the same purpose (blockage) buy at the other end.
Neither is healthy or gets to the root of the problel

Is it possible that if more people carried imodium, it would eliminate the need for nasal plugs?

Well there is lot of dust in the inner areas of every city in the India, but if you going to the upper part of the northern India then there you can find pleasant environment.

I'm saddened that Rhardy5554 has not been back to learn from the collective wisdom of fellow Fodorites.

He's asked me to thank everybody involved except Filmwill, who appears to have something stuck up his nose.

India smells no worse than the subways in NYC in the summer. Perhaps a trip to the Canadian Rockies?
