Suitable Gift - India

I am travelling to India in 3 weeks time and have been invited to dinner with the Muslim family of the owner of the travel company I am using. I would like to take a gift and am uncertain what. Any suggestions?

Where are you from? How about something unique or special from that area or your home country?

I live in the UK - in an area which is famous for Stilton Cheese, Pork Pies and Pottery (Wedgwood etc.) - none of which would seem particularly suitable. I know that most Indians love sweet things (edible) and wondered whether this was a good idea.

A gift hamper from one of the big hotels is an idea - both the Oberoi and the Taj will put one together for you from their pastry shops. It could include some sweet items (pastries, etc), some jams, chocolates, cold cuts (tho obv not pork), cheeses. Packaging is quite nice.

Our relatives in India ( I am in the US) like gifts from the US so what about a gift set from England, i.e something like Hobbes suggested except from there. It could include, e.g. teas, jams, scones, chocolates, cheeses, etc. in a decorative basket.

Thanks for your helpful suggestions. I like the idea of a gift hamper and although one from home would be lovely, I am travelling alone and trying to take the bare minimum with me. Will pick one up in Delhi. Thanks again.
