Suggestions for Itinerary from Beijing to Shanghai?

I'm tacking a few extra days of fun before a work trip. I will be landing in Beijing on a Sunday night and I need to make may way to Shanghai by Saturday afternoon.

Any suggestions of which areas/cities I should not miss? Xi'an is on my list, but I can't decide where else I should go! Yangtze River? Guilin? Zhangjiajie City? Can I even hit up more 3 places in a week?

As thursdaysd suggests, if you haven't been to either city before, you could be hard-pressed to see either of them within your time frame. It can easily take 6 days just to see Beijing's highlights!

For stops in between, Xi'an is a possibility if you have time -- and it easily merits at least a couple of days if not more.

If you have just one day (and that may be more than you have) another option would be Qufu.

Here's a recent thread that you might find helpful:

I already have time allotted for both Beijing and Shanghai.. I'll be in both for about 3 days each. I looking for something to do in between.

kja - Thanks for pointing out the other thread! I totally missed that one.

IMO, three days is VERY little time for Beijing.

I am still not clear on how many days you have in total but the places that you are suggesting are not conveniently visited in 2-3 days between Beijing and Shanghai. Spend enough time in these two cities and some some towns around Shanghai.

I have 3 full days in Beijing (beginning of the trip) and 3 full days in Shanghai (at the end of the trip). I know there is a lot to see, I really want to get a taste of a few other places. I have 6 days total between my scheduled Beijing portion and schedule Shanghai. I was thinking of spending at least 2 full days in Xi'an, but wasn't sure what else I could fit in.

If you are committed to giving Beijing only 3 days, then you might want to consider visiting Pingyao en route to Xi'an en route to Shanghai. If you haven't seen my trip report, you might find some useful info there -- just click on my name to find it. (It is LONG, but it is searchable.)
