Suan Lum Closure Update

Just wanted to update everyone about the closure of Suan Lum Night Bazaar since there has been a few post here about it. Today I play golf with the CEO of the Crown Property of Thailand who is in charge of the land where the Suan Lum night bazaar is situated and here's the latest about the closure.

The whole area will be knock down in phases starting of with the area fronting Rama 4 road. The whole property will be totally flatten by the end of the year(2006). Some shops will be open until then but most will be close from late February.

A new Japanese and Australian Embassy will be built there along with a project from the Central department store group.

Any plans to relocate the Bazaar at a different location?

Hate to see Bangkok lose so much of it's charm and accessibility. Places like Suan Lum provide alot of both.

Hanuman, Do you know about the Puppet Theater? We'll be in Bangkok in a week and were hoping to go one evening.

I note you'll be in BKK in one week. Will you be around for a GTG on the 29th at the Intercontinental?

Would have liked to but we'll be mid-air on our way.

CFW, the Joe Louis theater will be open until the end of the year and then they will have to move(I've call the theater to confirm the information). Enjoy the show!

Offwego, don't know of any relocation plan at the moment. When I meet my friend again I will ask.

Nancy Chandler has changed her info on Suan Lum. Her shop is closing now, but the rest of the market is remaining open until April 2007.

Hi

Is there any update on this please?
We will be in Bangkok next weekend and I'm wondering whether it will be open or not!
Thanks

Cathy,
The puppet theater will be open until the end of the year. As for the other shops they will begin a zone by zone closure commencing at the beginning of next month. If you would like to know if a specific store or shop will be open let me know and I can call to find out for you.

Thanks, no specific store in mind I was just wondering whether it would still be worth a visit - we'll go anyway and see what's open!

Does anyone know if they're relocating this market? Are there other night markets that are equivalent?

As one of the above posters said, the night market is not closing until 2007 - at least one more year. It was absolutely bustling when we were there 2 nights ago.

I believe it will be yet another mall. Perhaps someone else will weigh in on this.

I've heard mall and hotel. But I don't know if the rumor has any basis in fact.

Not sure about any updates, but I was just there this past saturday and it was on full blast. The place was so packed! I really loved it there, if they close hope it will relocate.

Thanks - I agree it would be a real shame if it were to close for good. I will be in Bangkok in December so am hoping that the timescales would be a bit like the new airport and keep slipping!!
