I'm with Craig as well. We went to Alaska with the extended family, which was fun for our purposes (FIL's 90th bday)...but for me there was a big disconnect - sublime nature at the ports, then back to Vegas with tacky chandeliers/cringe-worthy shows at night.

But, having said that, the Galapagos cruise was one of our best holidays ever...would do it again in a heartbeat.

A new England cruise during leaf changing season would be appealing to me. Cruising is totally about vegging and reading, relaxing, eating and evening entertainment. It is not a substitute for a foreign vacation, but rather a way of recuperating!

DH and I went on an Oceania cruise a few years ago that went from Hong Kong to Athens (31 days). Our Asian stops were Hong Kong, Na Trang, Saigon, Bangkok, Singapore, Phuket, Goa (side trip to Agra) and Mumbai. We really enjoyed the ports of call and the sea days. We felt that it gave us a short orientation to a number of places. We later went back to Vietnam to see more and I hope to see more of Thailand and India. On the other hand, we saw Egypt and Oman on this same cruise, and don't feel like we need to go back. We will do another cruise at some point but want to do more independent travel now (while we can).

The Danube River cruise sounds lovely, as does a New England fall color cruise. Bob..... see what you can do... (smile).

I don't know if I could handle 31 days on a ship. I've only done the 7-day ones thus far (but at least 6-8 of those) and enjoyed each one.

Bob.. the ship is very often the experience. I agree that the ports can be pretty ho-hum sometimes. I did the organized shore excursions on an Alaskan cruise, and did only ONE organized tour on a Mediterranean cruise. Bermuda doesn't require anything organized. Get your 3-day bus pass when you arrive and you can see everything on your own!

i intended to hate the cruise, but loved moping around...

at least it was not an organized tour with bags outside by 6:30 AM and a million shopping stops at tacky places.. we had the tacky places but did not visit, or at least i did not..

Bob- we did the Rhine cruise some years back- that is about as broad as my horizon is going to get. It was a one day deal so it was just right.

When I'm old and decrepit,

Love that line.....somehow I feel its how Andy would have described rhkkmk....

My in-laws once bought us a one-night cruise intro out of HI trying to entice us to go with them on their next Crystal Cruise......Crystal Cruises are considered 6 star but I guess we were just too young because we hated it.....we will have to wait until the decrepit stage to set in I guess.....

Aloha!

Cruising isn't for everyone. (That's good, 'cause then I can get a good balcony cabin!!)

Hey hey hey.... play nicely. We are ALL getting older, but as we like to say, you're as young as you feel. I feel 35, but I still like cruising.

Bob- you nearly did keep this a secret from me!

Oddly enough I just got back from a cruise- an expedition cruise in the Indian Ocean. Saw some places I'd never otherwise get to see. Outings were a little more challenging than the typical port visits.

Aha! I discovered this thread, thank God. First off, Smeagol and Pook, LOL at your comments.

Secondly, seriously a BOS GTG cruise? I can just picture this scenario: His Bobness insists everyone don a life vest to adhere to safety standards. In the middle of the night, he has the siren system tested to make certain all Fodorites evacuate their cabins and get into the lifeboats. He bans Dramamine from the ship, insisting that "nature take its course". OMG.

We've enjoyed the cruises we've gone on, and have found something interesting to see/do at every port. I certainly don't agree that the ports are a waste of time.

the reason for the middle of the night test would be for fodorites to get the best seats
