I am going to India next week, but with a group of photographers; I would never travel in India as a solo woman today.
I am a seasoned traveler. I have traveled solo in the past to many countries, and in India for a month 12 years ago with one other female friend, but there is no way I would travel today alone or even with one female friend. As thursdaysd said, there are many places where you can safely travel alone without great worry. India is no lonfwe one of them.
I know that those of you who live in India and are part of the tourist economy do not want to encourage frank discussion of female tourists not being safe in India, but your own foreign tourism minister said female tourists should never wear skirts. Well, now, there is a good solution for a rape problem--from the top of the government. Just have women not wear skirts. Talk about "enlightenment" Blame the skirt. Guess that must have been the problem of the 46 year old female tourist who was grabbed in a market and drugged and raped in Jaipur. Must have been the skirt that set up the rape of the 20 year old photojournalist who was with a MALE companion when they were on assignment (the male was attacked and tied up while the woman was raped).
So, it's not just the crime of rape. It's the lack of concern of police and politicians. It's your fault, not the rapist. You are asking for it, by not wearing a burka-kind of outfit.
Think I'm kidding?

Bottom line--travel alone to countries you don't need to be looking over your shoulder every five minutes. There are many. Go to India--it's a wonderful country--just connect with a group; there are lots of niche groups that are great.
