Skype from China

How clear is the reception using Skype to call a landline from China to Canada?

I've always found it to be little different from talking on a normal telephone, although occasionally there are blips, and I imagine there may be variations according to the equipment used. I use a slightly retro Apple laptop and I've used a variety of different headsets with little different between the results.

I regularly use Skype from China for both business and personal calls to countries all over the world, including Canada.

We use do skype video to and from Hong Kong several times a week and always have a clear signal and picture. So, that doesn't seem to be a problem.

However, never have used skype to call a landline as all the people we call have computers.

Good luck.

It really has only to do with the bandwidth of your internet connection and not the country you're calling from.

If you have a strong connection, you'll have almost spotless quality. The lower the quality of your connection, the lower the quality of your call.

I use it on all internbational trips for work. Not 100% quality but fine for calls etc. I am using it again inChina next week. Well worth it.

During our current round the world trip, I have been using skype to landlines and mobiles and pcs from all over the world. Usually, it has been great, occasionally a few problems with poor sound quality or lost commentions. Basically, filmwill is spot on in his comments.

Have just installed Skype on my laptop, and got an international subscription. Made a test call from NYC to a landline in Sweden. Which doesn't answer your question re China to Canada.

Just thought I would give you my very limited experience from this morning as to using Skype. Want to use it on my upcoming trip through SEA.

I could hear my niece very well, we had occasional dips. I have cable connection here with I presume good bandwidth, still there were a few seconds when I disappeared.

Am totally in awe of how technology has changed the way we live, travel and communicate.

So I guess the lesson there is: don't text chat while in China. Speak away to your heart's content, though.

The lesson is, 'Text chat all you want in China because they authorities have no interest in the casual tourist, who can say what he or she likes. But merely be careful what you say to Chinese nationals who might be using the Chinese version of Skype. That's the one with the hole, and they are the people who might get the knock at the door.'

And the jury's out on whether speech is monitored. As you'll note from the second article, experts say it's perfectly possible to monitor Skype speech, especially if you are the service provider. And if it's possible, you can be confident it's happening in China, just as it is to all other forms of voice and text message communications.
