I am a big believer in walking off jet lag (personally I think a big part of it is the lack of motion for so many hours) and there is no better place to do it than the Botanical Garden. Entrance to the main garden is free and there is a nominal charge to visit the Orchid Garden, which is beautiful.

As the previous poster mentioned, the Night Safari is one of the best attractions here. Long Beach Restaurant is located on the East Coast and the food is excellent.

Visit Little India, Chinatown and Arab Street (all fairly centrally located) to get a taste of the very multicultural melting pot that is Singapore. All of them have lots of restaurants, good shopping and interesting mosques and temples.

Visit Raffles Hotel because it's historical and beautiful, but don't waste your money on a Singapore Sling. Instead, in the morning, go to Ah Teng's Bakery, which is tucked in a corner, buy some breakfast and carry your tray out to the courtyard to soak up the ambiance while you eat.

Yes to what others have said, there is lots to do that it suites all tastes, nightlife is more active these days. Bugis street market and Bugis Street Junction I found better for shoppong than Orchard Road. Lovely hotel is the 'Royal Peacock' in Chinatown, it is a boutique hotel in old fashioned style, highly recommended, and cheap too.

The suggestions are all great so far. I'd add that a walk down Orchard Rd is worth it on an evening. The malls and dept stores are good to cool off in, and there are plenty of cafes. The bars/restaurants on Cuppage Place (I think that's the name) are nice.

My favourite eating places are the Victoria St food court (nr Raffles, and on the way up to Bugis), and the Ling Zhi vegetarian now at Far East Square is spectacular.

Yes, it can feel sterile, but it's safe, friendly enough, and you can have a great time there.

The cable car over to sentosa island is worth a go!

I'm a strict vegetarian too. You'll have a harder time in sg than omnivores, but what you get will be delicious. Almost all food courts have a vegetarian option, with the most fantastic bean curd dishes, and lots of pretend meat made of gluten, which is fun.

There's a great buddhist vegetarian cafe on the corner of Waterloo Street and Middle Rd, not far from Bugis. Doesn't look like much, but great food.

And you /have/ to go to Ling Zhi! More expensive than a food court, but worth every cent.

I've just posted some of my pics of singapore at

http://homepage.mac.com/sharl/pictures/

Let me know how you get on!

Another suggestion: the Asian Cultural Museum.

As far as food is concerned, there is every kind of cuisine in the world available. Some of my favorite places to eat (upper end) are Doc Cheng's in Raffles, and Les Amis au Jardin in the botanical garden (very expensive, but a lovely place of a romantic lunch overlooking the gardens).
