I liked the Perak hotel in Little India. The area seems so much more human, compared to other districts of S'pore. There, common folks are walking, talking, shopping at outdoor stalls for fruits and vegs, visiting colorful temples rather than moaning about the weather, oogling luxury goods on Orchard road and eating western food in high rise, over-cooled hotels.

Thanks for all the suggestions.Decided on the Shangri-La near Orchard Rd . there was a very good online rate that was hard to resist.
