side trip from Bangkok?

Hello all! We're going to be in Bangkok only for 2 days and would like to do a side trip one of those days-something outside of the city. Does anyone know of anything that's fairly close to Bangkok (maybe 2 hours at the most driving or busing)? We're up for anything. Thanx in advance.

Have you already been to Bangkok and seen all you want to? If not, with only 2 days I wouldn't go anywhere outside of Bangkok...there is so much to see in the city itself. 2 days would be enough time to just get a glimpse of what the city has to offer for sightseeing.

The Grand Palace, Wat Arun, Jim Thompson House, Vinmanek Palace, Wat Po, klongs, Royal Barge museum...just those things are more than 2 days worth. And there is much more.

If you feel you must get out of the city, then the Floating Market is popular, as is Ayuthaya. You can get a tour to each, or get a car and driver. A car and driver doesn't usually cost any more than a tour (in my experience) and you have the luxury of going where you want when you want for how long you want. There is also Ko Kret/Ko Kred...small island up river that has a big market area, no cars, and is quite nice.

If it's your first visit to Bangkok, though, I'd stay right in the city. Get a good guidebook and a Nancy Chandler map and enjoy.

With 2 days you can definately be totaly occupied in Bangkok and I would not try ot venture elsewhere unless this is your X trip to BKK for 2 days.
Happy travels

I agree with most of the above. Two days is not enough in BKK. If you really feel like you have to leave, however, skip the floating market. I find it to be a real yawn. Opt for Ayutthaya. You can get their by bus, train, car or tour. Whichever way you go make sure to visit Wat Chai Watttanaram when the sun is beginning to set. The warm amber glow of the setting sun falls so softly over the red bricks of this temple that you'll swear you've reached nirvana. Bring A LOT of film (or extra compact flash card).
