Should i arrange for a travel guide in Singapore?

Hi,
This is the first time my family (all adults) and I will be travelling to Singapore. Should I arrange for a travel guide to show around the place or do it myself? Is it easy to travel to different places in Singapore? Any suggestions how/where I can arrange for a travel guide. Thanks in advance!

Not that I've been yet....
But, in my research it honestly sounds dead easy to get around using MRT and taxis. I did see that you can hire the services of taxi guides, that might be nice if you were inclined to try to see a lot in a short time without the hassle of self navigation. I saw the info about the taxi guides, as well as a wealth of other tourist related info on http://www.visitsingapore.com/publis.../en/index.html If you haven't browsed through that site yet, you definitely should...we got loads of ideas on what to do there, so many that we infact changed a 3 day stay to a 6 day stay.

I don't mean to be sarcastic, but if you would feel the need to hire a guide to show you New York city, then you would probably need a guide for Singapore.

Everyone speaks English. Taxis are inexpensive. The MRT is excellent and easy to use.

Singapore is very easy to get around by yourself as (i) English is very widely spoken and is on all signage and public transport (ii) public transport is excellent and cheap, and (ii) taxis are plentiful and cheap. Also there is very little that is ancient or even old, so you don’t have many historical sites for which a guide would be useful, unlike someplace like the Grand Palace in Bangkok or the Red Fort in New Delhi. Finally, a good bit of the main tourist sites in Singapore are quite close together and walkable, like the colonial area around the river in Raffles Place, or the area of “Little India” around Serangoon Road.

A guidebook with a “walking tour” and map would be all that you need. Try the Fodors book which generally has good self-guided walking tours. I am betting that the Singapore Tourist Authority already has one or more on their website at /www.visitsingapore.com. They probably also have info on guided tours and walks there as well. They country is extremely well-organized and tourist-savvy. I know you will be there during Christmas, and the site probably has events listed for Christmas like concerts, etc.

The other places like the Zoo, Bird Park. Botanical Gardens, and shopping areas of Orchard Road do not require a guide at all.

Other than the zoo and the bird park and the east coast or Punggol areas if you want some good seafood, virtually everything you want to see as a tourist is within about a 3-5 mile radius of the main CBD city centre and reachable by MTR or a very quick cab ride.

Singapore is just 'so easy' to get around you don't need a guide, but I certainly suggest doing some good research before going as there are always things going on and lots of activities, so check what is happening when you visit.
Although busy and modern there are plenty of activities and even nature things to do as Singaporeans like to escpape from work at weekends and there are always things going on:

Lets you see lots of parts of Singapore away from the main sights, if you are into nature.
As Cicerone suggested Visitsingapore is a good place to start.
Others

http://www.birdpark.com.sg/

There is the nigh safari, you can have a guided tour of Chinatown, wlaking tour of Little India, lots of day and half day tours also, hotels have plenty of details and local What's On magazines.
This places gives you ideas of places to walk around and includes some real interesting ones

SMRT system
http://www.smrt.com.sg/indexn.html

We usualy only have a couple of days and certainly there are so many things we have not got around to there, but really it is one of the most easy places to get around and there is plenty of information there.
The SMRET is cheap and easy, taxis readily available.
I would search though some of those sights and get a feel how to spend your time. Signs and information in English and people will freely help you out and direct you.

Here is something good and old fashioned! Check here to see if there is a Singapore Tourist Board office in your country, they may be able to send you some information by mail, In the US they are in LA and NYC

http://app.stb.com.sg/asp/index.asp

Click on 'International group' and they have a list of overseas offices, also try for a local guide book with maps or even check your local library, guide 'books' may be somewhat out of date but you can sit back and browse.

You don't need a guide but as with most cities, it's not a bad idea to go on a city tour which takes in all the must-see sights. It saves time and is more convenient. Be prepared for the heat and humidity!

No guide needed. Do avail yourelf of the excellent publications of teh Singapore tourist board. They have a great guidebook, maps, etc. I typically use the MRT 90% of the time to get around and taxis the other 10%. make sure you stay in a hotel that is close to an MRT station.

A travel guide is absolutely not necessary in Singapore. Singapore is tiny. The whole country is half the size of Los Angeles County. And Singapore City is REALLY small. I vacation there regularly. Just get a hotel close to an MRT station. Plus, taxis are not that expensive. There are over 10,000 of them in Singapore. Type "Singapore" in the search box and then scroll down to my name and I've answered a lot of questions about Singapore. Happy Travels!
