I've never stayed there, but I had lunch there (some years ago). It looked like a 5-star hotel, judging from the grounds and the buildings, although we didn't see the rooms. Beach looked very nice as well, and the grounds were well kept (and large).

It is a beautiful 5 star hotel and great for relaxation. The area was formerly a disused tin mine. There are a cluster of hotels, such as the Dusit, Laguna Beach, Banyan Tree (well spread out). And, you can travel to the other hotels by boat. Service at the hotel is excellent. To get to Patong (restaurants, bars and night market) would take about 40 mins. Do not know if Sheraton runs a shuttle to Patong.

I have the personal unfortunate experience of staying the this hotel. Despite its great look from the outside, the service is quite poor. Not withstanding the Sheraton name, the service is definitely not up to par to international standards. Just to give you a taste of my problems there, i dialed 0 for the operator three times each on two separate nights and no one picked up for a single time. All I wanted to do was to get a wake up call and it is not a very big deal if no one picks up the phone but what if I was seriously injured? This is not a hotel that I would go back to or recommend to others. As Les pointed out, there are other hotels on the same property. They are all quite close to each other and the Banyan, though a bit more expensive, is miles better in service.
