You are right Kathie, most people "should" be able to navigate Bangkok with a good map amd a little research. A good guide will just make the experience easier and take away the initial orientation factor and language barrier, particularly for the less seasoned traveller.
If you have time on your hands and dont mind making the odd mistake and occassionally getting lost..go for it. Sometimes you can discover more this way. If time is not your friend and you think you will benefit from the comfort of a trustworthy local, I cant see anything wrong with using a guide. Many guides, such as Tong, will do a trip with you around Bangkok using public transport or combination of PT and private vehicle and it wont cost much more than a guide book and a Nancy Chandler Map.

Here's the simple answer. One does not need a guide for Bangkok. Nonetheless, it may add to your enjoyment. No one can determine for you whether a guide will add to your enjoyment or not. If so, many here have enjoyed Tong and Ratt as well as some others.

OK...you've all convinced me. I'd like a guide for at least one of the days I'm in Bangkok this coming February. so can someone give me Tong's and Ratt's email address to see if either is available?

Sandra, having read you other posts about this trip, I would advise you to use a guide for one of your days in Bangkok.
