royal barges/Loy Krathong in November?
I know it's early, but does anyone know if the Royal Barge ceremony will be performed during November 2008? planing a trip to BKK and trying to be there for that. How about Loy Krathong? Lots of websites say the full moon will be on Nov. 12 2008.

The royal barges don't always sail around Loy Krathong. This year was unique, as it was leading up to the King's 80th birthday. They don't always sail on the King's birthday either. So unless they have announced a royal barge parade, you won't know whether or not they will sail. By the way, actually getting to see the barges sail is rather difficult. Even if you are in Bangkok at the time, the chances that you can get tickets are slim.
I love being in Bangkok for Loy Krathong! Do plan to stay by the river for the sailing of the krathongs and the fireworks.

This last Loy Krathong the barges did not sail at festival time but about a week later for the Kings Birthday (and I believe they also were out a few weeks before).
Do as Kathie says and try to be on the river as its lovely and the fire works are great. Best place to see them is from the river hotels. We saw them this year from the terrace of the Peninsula. I'd actually prefer being up in the rooms. We've seen the fireworks up there at about the height that they burst and its great. One disadvantage of being on the terraces is that the fireworks go off in the middle of the river which is not far at all from either side. You will get a shower of smoking debris falling on you so watch out for your clothes! This year we saw some very alight debris falling into the buildings too! The piers around the river get very very crowded but its interesting to see all the people buying and launching their Krathongs.
