Pandas do not kiss and tell. What happens in Pandaland stays in Pandaland.

I realized that there are no doubt some Fororites who loath my absurd commentary. They are derious about their travel and want to read the experiences of others from whom they can learn. My veering off and ridicule detract from the substantive elements of the thread. They are probably large in numbers. To these people I apologize. I'm sorry that my posts detract from your appreciation of Fodors. The plain fact of the matter is that I'm not going to stop. I have made some wonderful friends who appear to like my posts. I suggest that you might discover others with mindsets similar to yours. You can have your own GTG's. I have no problem with that whatsoever. I promise not to come.

"Maybe if I fake a slip and fall, I can pretend I hurt my ankle..."

Good grief, GPanda, has the radiation really fried your last 3 brain cells? Don't you realize the very thought of such deception now has the Great Karma reaching for the rug to pull it from under your slothful feet? Pony up & get working on those chores or you'll be trying to balance on a crutch as you tee off!

Gpanda, dissent + commentary = dysentery.

I believe this is the explanation of your "off topic" posts.

Karma does not care how many chores I do. There are an infinite number of chores. If I accomplished 50, there would still be an infinite number left. So, why not cut the 50 back to 2 or 3. A much easier number with which I can deal. Now, how to make sure those 2 or 3 appear to take a long time, but are really easy. That's the secret. We're seeking the appearance of diligence with minimal effort. It's the nature of pandahood.

This is relevant to the Bali thread because I was planning on being on this trip. If I were, exactly no chores would get done. None! Therefore minimizing the ones that do when I should have been away is critical to Bob and Karen enjoying themselves. I only think of others.

Bob,
Now that you've been to Bali again (I"m assuming it's for the second time but it may have been more), are you enjoying it as much as the first experience? Since you don't need to see a lot of the "must sees", do you feel like you're getting more into the essence of Bali, or am I romantisizing it? Would appreciate hearing your thoughts on the subject.

This is Bob's third trip to Bali. Seeking his "thoughts on the subject" may be too ambitious. Let's hope he manages to convey his feelings. Plus, I have a list of chores for him to accomplish on his retutn.

Bokhara2, Nicky is the real name of the poster named Smeagol.

Bob & Karen, barefootbeach asks an interesting question. Is this indeed your second (or more) trip to Bali, and if so, are you feeling a bit more familiar, or trying out a different itinerary?

Andy, shut up and do your chores. A ridiculous assertion like "If I'd gone on the Bali trip, NO chores would be getting done" is the height of absurdity. The Bali trip that Bob & Karen are taking is now an alternate reality for you; if you'd taken a trip to the moon, there would also be no chores getting done. Get cracking, mister, it's only a 3-day weekend.

BC, obviously no explanation needed for my spintershood

Thank you, Thank you, comrade Gpanda, for refreshing my memory about the details of marriagehood.

The bird is chirping in Billerica (we're hoping for a 2nd one some year) (or possibly that's not the bird but instead is the neighbor's post-toddler jumping up and down again on her Chatty Cathy) and somewhere there is an list, very much unwritten, of chores to be done at Casa Rizzuto. The existence of that list will go unacknowledged. I'm still trying to figure out if there's a Becky Thatcher type in the neighborhood who will recognize the thrill of doing my laundry, however.

Rizutto-glad to be of help. I remind you that the dry cleaners will actually do your normal laundry as well. You have to buy a few more items to cover the time when the stuff is at the cleanerd, but a small deyail. I also note that they will do a better job cleaning your clothes than you would do. It's win-win.

Let the bobbing and weaving begin. Chore avoidance will be my weekend goal. It's good to have goals. It keeps you from doing nothing. It takes a panda to characterize doing nothing as an actual goal.

Agree about the goodness of having goals. And, when any of such goals is reached, it's always fitting to reward oneself with a few cigars, hours of relaxation, and similar pursuits

Today's chores:

1. Carried up big post from basement. They weigh about 125 pounds (55 kilos), so even though it took about 1 minute for each pot, I stretched it out to look like an onerous task. In fact, I was delighted that I could carry such a heavy and ackward thing. It was no more of a pain than in the past.

2. Went to the nursery and bought plants to put in the above pots. The trick is that Beth went along so each plant was subjected to intense scrutiny. The problem is that it was not only the plants that we pourchased but a bunck of other as well.

This relates to the trip report becaiuse I can guarantee that Bob hasn't done a single chore since they landed. One of the delights of a Bali vacation is that the entire island is service oriented. No chores.

Andy, Andy, Andy. I'll bet you didn't know that you have a TWIN in the midwest!!! I just met him about two hours ago. I was really quite stunned at the similarity... except in one important area. He's running for USCongress from my district in Illinois. He's a Republican!!!!! (and a really nice guy) I told him he had a twin in Cambridge. I'm not sure whether he was impressed or not...

Anyway, sorry for breaking into the conversation here.

i can see it now, GP arrives home with the 3/4 dead plants---a bargain left over from last year... flowers will appear by november... but wait.. where is the dirt to plant them??? back to the nursery or to whole foods to get "quality dirt"...

the pots are made of polamar and weigh about a pound each---complaints continue...

einstein had the "fresh" idea for planting" foliage down, roots up... ONLY IN CAMBRIDGE THAT PINKEST OF COMMUNITIES WHERE EVERYONE IS MORE THAN EQUAL, BUT ALL ARE BRILLIANT AT EVERYTHING BUT TIE SHOES AND CHEWING GUM---AND CERTAINLY NOT BOTH AT THE SAME TIME...

i have a trip up date all written in word, must just now transmit it when i get wi-fi...

had a lovely lazy day yesterday...

miss my internet fixes, without internet...

good phone connections here to home in usa...

ok, i found wi-fi from a local cafe that works in the hotel...3 hrs for $2---but very slow....

Friday (cont)

We gathered our things together after breakfast and during a break in the showers made our way back through the water palace to the parking lot and our car. One man carried our stuff and k and I each took our carry-ons, lifting them over big puddles.

We leave tirta ayu with a fond memory… the staff could not have been nicer, the food was decent and our small bungalow was perfect. Sitting on our porch reading and/or relaxing with the lush tropical foliage all around us and the hour glass shaped pool before us could not have been more relaxing…. Hours spent in the restaurant on the internet while overlooking the water palace could not have been more pleasant… for some reason the wi-fi in our room did not work..

So at about 10:30 we were off heading north and then west to the north shore area called Lovina—it is both an area and a town. We have never been to the north shore before. It is a huge dive destination. We are finding that the areas outside of the south and ubud are largely visited by Europeans, mostly German, Dutch and French and surprisingly less Aussies than you would expect… some might even consider this a bonus… haha.

The driving was quite good. Good two lane roads, light traffic and soon bright sun. We made our first detour after perhaps 30-45 minutes into the area of Amed. This is a seaside area of small hotels, home-stays and small restaurants largely catering to young people and back-packers. The road is very narrow, goes up and down hills/cliffs directly above the sea. I think we went almost 10 miles before we turned around… At one point we even had to ford a small tidal river/stream of water about 30 feet wide and 6-8” deep.
We were unable to make up our minds about where to stop for lunch… We passed a western man on a motorcycle shortly before we turned around and when we went back we found him on one of the hills texting someone. We asked him if he spoke English and it turns out he was from northern CA, having married a Balinese woman and settled down here with a small hotel and restaurant… so he answered K’s question about a good place: “my wife’s restaurant just back down then road up on the cliff..”…so we turned around again and headed back ½ mile…

The place was lovely, up high above the sea with a strong breeze. Just in front of this place there is a sunken Japanese ship from WWII that divers and snorkelers frequent… it is very close to shore… we could see them while eating..

The service was very very slow but we were in no hurry—its bali afterall. We each had a grilled prawn plate which was good, water and a coconut crepe for dessert. A young Frenchman was there giving the American ideas for moving the kitchen… his kids ran around while his bali wife ignored it all.
So we retraced our steps back to the main road… Along one part we passed a number of very lovely lux modern villas overlooking the ocean… Other than that the road was pretty boring with town after town of small houses many in poor shape, zillions of motorbikes and people sitting around doing nothing, which seems to be a bali pass-time, plus of course many rice paddies. Honestly it was a bit depressing. We were never very far from the ocean.

Eventually the road conditions changed and for perhaps 30 miles we were on the worst road ever with huge holes but worse even were the bumps and uneven road base. One could not go faster than maybe 25 MPH. This nearly did me in, plus I had a stomach problem…

Finally the road conditions changed back again and perhaps the last 20 miles were good.
While at a traffic light approaching Lovina, a bike pulled up next to me and the man signaled me to roll down my window… he smiled and handed me a card for his beachside bungalows… the light changed and off we went… we followed him to within one block of the turnoff for our hotel in the area of Lovina Kalibukbuk… This short road has a number of small hotels, restaurants and nice shops and ends at the beach… Our hotel, the Rambutan was just down the road on the right… It is a lovely small complex in a garden setting with perhaps 30 one and two story buildings. There is a small pool just opposite our bungalow and a larger one in front of the restaurant and bar at the back of the property…. The hotel is not on the water.

Our bungalow is a free standing one story unit with a large sitting room with a wardrobe and an apartment sized fridge…. The bedroom is through a large archway. The king sized bed is comfortable and is a four poster, but without netting. Each room has an overhead fan and there is one a/c unit on the wall—it is undersized I think but adequate. Off of the bedroom, and through a wooden door is a huge open air bathroom with a small garden. There is no bathtub, but there is a huge shower area made of stone with the base a semi circle perhaps 5 feet across. The whole area is covered except for a 2 foot gap across the back which allows the sunshine in for the plants and also water to water them. The floor is cement but looks like tiles with pebbles in between them…. The walls are dark and have tons of stone inlay, some looking like flowers… it is really very attractive… Bugs do not seem to be a problem, even at night…. The toilet is recessed in an area by itself..
We have a nice front porch with a drying rack, table and 3 chairs plus shrubs and flowering plants all around.
The sitting room also has a single bed, which we use for suitcases, a full rattan sofa and two rattan chairs…. $85.50 with an internet rate.

The included breakfast is plate served with choice, and is very good and freshly cooked. We had dinner here Friday nite which was good enough, but we were the only ones eating at 7PM. Prices might be a bit high for this area.

The German family we met at the water temple were here to greet us…. The 13 year old boy even came to the door and asked me to go swimming with him this PM---ok, andy so finally someone in my mental age group takes a liking to me-- actually he is far more intelligent than I, or in fact you too…
After the day’s drive we were tired!! We dropped our bags and headed for the larger pool… Stayed in the pool until about dark.

K had a steak for dinner which was only so so and I had chicken satay and rice, which came cooking on its own small charcoal burner. I had carrot cake and k had hummingbird cake for dessert.

Another early nite… only 7 tv channels, some in English..

Saturday

I think I did not get up till 9. I had had some stomach problems.

We went to the restaurant for breakfast which was good. We then walked along our street visiting a number of the little shops. Some were quite nice really—wood carving, jewelry, wall hangings, textiles. We headed down towards the water. Along the way a father and cute son were sitting on a motorbike. We admired the child and had some small talk. Of course this was a set up and out came the goods for sale. He makes pendants out of shells, sand, resin and other natural materials, each one has a silver ring on the top and comes with a black cotton cord--- they were quite attractive and at $2-5 a good little present. K bought 12 and he gave her one after some bargaining. At the end of this deal, a friend rode up offering pearls---the word is out…. NO!!!

We continued our walk to the beach where we sat in a restaurant and drank some cold water. Pearl man reappears---his name is Made we learn.. Next we met a Slovac couple—mother and grown son. They join us for a drink…. Made and friends hang out. It is mother’s 60th birthday so I buy her a pendant which Made now produces.. The son is a real hoot. For a while, I had thought we were being set up for something, but we parted and they went down the beach to look at a beach front rental???

I returned to the hotel, bought some water and k walked along the beach looking at the shops. We went for a swim. Then we had lunch at the restaurant---omelet for me and a bowl of spaghetti for K… K stayed at the pool for the afternoon and I was in the room reading and typing this, plus a snooze.

The german boy came to ask me to swim, but I was typing this, and then my battery ran down so I went swimming until it showered and we went back to the room…

Meeting the Germans at 6 for dinner outside the complex… The father just came to the door to cancel as the boy has been acting up and is being punished for being fresh and not doing his math homework …. He cancelled… now he just returned with the wife to say the 4 of us will go without Konstantin who has been sent to bed…

We walked down to the seaside and went into one place and ordered drinks. We did not really like the menu so we paid and moved across the street where they had a more extensive menu, including fresh tuna which both K and Karsten wanted… The menu was very extensive, both international and Indonesian foods. We had a really nice older lady for our waitress and had a thoroughly good time. They had their fish grilled with lovely mixed fresh veggies and rice… I had a grilled chicken cutlet with fresh salsa and FF plus fresh veggies… Ines had a special Indonesian plate with veggies and rice and a fried egg on top…. Wine was cheap, $5.50 for a two glass carafe, so both red and white was ordered… K and I had desserts, then had none… we split the 292,000 bill – about $15+ per couple… it was very good, btw… K did not dare to order the tuna rare, plus it was a thin piece so probably would have been impossible to cook that way anyways… The restaurant name is Warung Bintang Bali.

Ines woke with some back stiffness and it got worse during the day. K gave her some flexeril to try….. it is what I use when I am in bad shape…

They leave tomorrow so we expect to see them in the AM briefly…

Some reading and off to bed early again…

Oh dear. We have, since I last checked in, Rizzuto being himself, (BTW, I would gladly send you some birds from Plymouth--despite unemployment I rarely sleep past 6 due to their incessant chirping, they're obviously not nightingales.) Gpanda, having us believing he did "chores" (ha! I now after a light sunburn as well as blisters on my feet, pal!), and Bob apparently corrupting a young teen who will one day run the EU's financial market, but is now skipping out of math homework to go swimming with him!! Carol, I used to work..well, you know where, and we had a younger version of Gpanda there, too, it was amazing. (Although I must say I much prefer Gpanda's hair--even if he's molting now--to the way this kid had worn his hair for a bit--he'd had it in a slightly modified mullet!)

Looking forward to reading more, Bob, but I am enjoying reading this report so much right now. It's one of the few things keeping me (passing for) sane. I am car-less this weekend, which would be of little consequence in Cambridge/Boston, but doesn't bode well for me here. All I can say in looking on the bright side is that after the weekend ends and my car is returned to me, at least I'll be able to go to the beach while others are "slugging it out" in their offices, so no crowds!

It sounds very relaxing. Not a single chore reared its ugly head. Good for Bob. I'm guessing all the other hotel gusts took up a collection and paid the young german to take Bob swimming, so he would be confined to one easily avoidable area of the hotel.

Oh, Gpanda, envy does not become you at all.

And even if it were true that the guests paid off the little German kid, it obviously didn't work for long!

The guy might be from Needham, but it looks like he's got a damn good sense of exploration & adventure. Good trip, good report.
