Just caught up with this - am traveling - since Sep 23. So sad to hear about the development on Lombok - it was such an "out of the world" place ten years ago. And I had already read about the growth on the gilis.

Sounds like maybe I should have headed for Thailand instead of Europe this trip if BKK is so empty.

I went to Lombok 4 years ago and compared to many places it's still " under developed"

We have now been told by a hotel person that ROS is full because they dropped the price and tour groups, especially Chinese, moved in.

Oct 4... Great early day hanging around the hotel and the pool... Great breakfast in the temp breakfast room..

At 3:15 roger (tong's driver) picked us up (6 of us) and we drove to soi 10, sukhumvit for two more. from there we headed out of town north on the expressway to Pook's house where we were royally greeted, welcomed and fed. dang cooked it all, AND IT WAS HER BIRTHDAY... Real thai food.
Such an enjoyable dinner, so much fun, fabulous food and friendship. After a relaxing evening we were driven back to town.

Dinner: way too complicated to describe, but suffice it to say, no one went away hungry. It was a BBQ with thai dishes.

Oct 5

all met up at the Kempinski Hotel behind Siam Paragon for brunch... Lucy joined us, rhk's, HIT's, Hanuman's, Pat and sister Kathleen, K & J. we stayed from 12-5, if you can believe it... A lux buffet (Canadian lobsters, shrimp, crab, oysters, froi gras 5 ways, beef fillets, pastas, lamb chops, bass fillet, risotto, sushi, sashimi, salads, lobster bisque, cheeses, etc, etc.) plus with or w/o free flow moet, wines, and all kinds of mixed drinks... Desserts: forget it.... More and better than you can imagine.... 3150B/2200B pp. amazing, amazing... but even better than the food was the Fodorite companionship and loud laughter. It was also Lucy's birthday so Pook ordered a special rich chocolate cake and the whole place sang happy birthday.
No one was "under served"...

Some had their pics taken with a young female pop music star who was there for brunch.

About 5:30 we returned to the hotel... One of our more memorable days.

By 8:30 I was fighting to stay awake...

Monday

Smallish breakfast for me this AM as we plan on a large lunch... At 10 we loaded into a taxi (pat, kathleen, k & me). We were heading over to Silom rd to Silom Village. Boy has it changed... Much larger and nicer shops. Gale had suggested that the girls would like the shoes in the small shop called Pooshim--- down left side of the village a few doors and then on your right... Bingo.. Limited flats but many wedges and small heels--- real stone decoration, leather, very unusual...all hand made in silk, leather, rubber soles.. Prices 1200-1500B with an occasional small discount. Open about 10-10.

Diagonally across the passage is a very nice bag store that smeagol had suggested to us-- Jinny's. All the girls bought leather bags for about 2000B.. Thai design with a western look.

From there we taxied to Le Beaulieu Restaurant in the office bldg directly behind Plaza Anthanee Hotel for lunch. Fantastically priced 3 course French luncheon specials at 695 and 995++. Absolute perfection. It is the end of our all hands on deck bkk GTG as K&J head out to the airport tomorrow.

Taxi back to the hotel... K,P, & K stopped their taxi to pick up laundry along the way..

BTW, it has rained hard a few times today.... Guess the temps to average high 80's and the usual humidity... Not really bad at all.

L, K and I went for a swim, the sisters headed across the river to the area around Robinsons and new road to poke around... P retreated to his room to calculate how much $$ Linda spent at SJ Jewerly today... I think I can hear him crying next door. Quite a few of our gang spent the AM at SJ Jewerly having been picked up at the hotels at 9:30. How do you say Gold, Rubies, Sapphires, Silver, semi-precious stones, etc. Lily was pleased to see them.

Dinner tonight will be light here at the hotel.

Tommorow will be visit number 1 to Platinum Fashion Mall.

My lunch: Evian water, Nicesoire )sp) salad, pork tenderloin (ran out) so I asked to substitute a small steak, delicious paper thin apple tart made with puff pastry and fresh vanilla bean ice cream...

K: grilled veggies and chicken breast salad, sea bass and millefoires (sp) with puff pastry and mango sorbet .

Haha Pook. Bob it's not all that cold here. We get some rain but when the sun comes out it reaches about 65. Hoping to drive over to the coast today, but getting a late start! Big lobstah feast last night at a friend's house. We're moving slowly...

More shopping news pleasr! How was Platinum?
