Return to BKK (maybe)

I'm home from the hospital and hope to recover fast enough to get on the road again in late Jun-early Jul. See other forum thread below for details.

Looking for a medical clearance. Expect to be able to spend a couple of two night stays in BKK enroute and returning from other SE destinations. . I've been about 20 times before, but BKK still draws me back. How would you proceed if you were in my situation? Should I live large and splurge or go with what seems comfortable and familiar? What are some of your recommendations for special treats/delights to indulge in?

I mentioned on the other thread that you need to get back to BKK to the Pickled Liver!

In your condition, I'd do what is familiar and comfortable!

I meant to tell you, in the other thread, that a good friend of mine from here in Illinois had his kidney removed... at Bumrungrad in Bangkok! He trusts THEM more than he trusts his regular doctors in CHIGACO!! The docs at Bum are the ones who found his cancer, during a routine physical. His Chicago docs confirmed the diagnosis.

It has also taken him a very long time to feel himself again. I think losing a kidney is quite a shock to your body. He is fine now. You might want to stay somewhere near to Bumrungrad... I assume you are already registered there? If not, I'd make that priority #1 on arrival in Bangkok.

I hope your results are good as well!!

It really IS great to see your posts back here in fodorville.

Carol

Hi Carol

Thanks for the advice. I have garlic shrimp at the pickled Liver on my to do list.

Yes, I am registered at Bumrungrad. My situation was similar to your friend's. They found my cancer and my docs confirmed it and then took action.

degas, it's good to have you back!

If it were me, and it's not, I'd likely do some old favorite things and throw in a couple of things I've longed to do or places I've longed to see. I'd take it easy and stay at places that would pamper me. I'd also indulge in some spa treatments - gentle massage and such (no traditional Thai massage!).

Hi Kathie, I do intend to throttle back a bit: afternoon nap and not staying up too late. Guess the spa should come before the nap and after a nice brunch?

That sounds like a good plan to me, though I prefer spa before I eat.

Sounds great! Now, for me, I have to throw in SHOPPING somewhere... lol

Main thing... take it easy. Give your body time to heal.

Carol - true enough. I was agonzing myself on how to inject perhaps a movie and a bit of shopping. But that might make things too stressful this time.

And might I suggest that the Adelphi is very close to the skytrain (as you know) for ease of getting around. Also, Via Vai, right across the "street" serves just about the best pizza we have found in BKK.

If you can manage a trip over to soi 4, stop by and introduce yourself to Dr Jack at Annie's. He sits outside in the afternoons. It's right across from the entrance to the Raja hotel lobby/pool. I have no doubts in my mind that you would really enjoy meeting him! Tell him Carol says hi.

Have a great time. No need to add any more activities unless you feel like it. Remember, the point is to rest, relax and recover.

I got the medical clearance to travel, but had to promise not to try and do too much or lift anything heavy. Relax and recover it will be.

Have a good time, and do take it easy! Say hello to Maeng. She will remember you, I guarantee it.
