I just kind of speed-read through your report again and had to laugh when you mentioned that you like the salad-in-a- bowl at Greyhound Cafe...I live off of salad-in-a-bowl at Greyhound Cafe in Emporium Mall. How much was your serviced apartment? I go to Southeast Asia quite a bit for vacation...I live in L.A. area and it's very cheap to zip over to Bangkok. I was just in BK and Singapore again in August. I'm thinking of renting a serviced apartment the next trip... for summer...for two months. Do you know what the monthly rate was for your place? Is it located in the Sukhumvit...soi 11 area? I remember Orgy 7 giving me the name of the Thai language school that he goes to...which he said is in soi 11 where the Solitaire President is...Is that the same place you stayed at? So many places have similiar names in BK. I might enroll in language school so I'd like an apartment close by. Is the place where you stayed near the skytrain stop and if so...which one? Oh, and were there any problems at your place with mosquitos, roaches, and geckos running around? I'm tired of sleeping with the critters. I've slept with enough of them over the past three decades of international travel! Happy Travels!

Guenmai:
I looked at the bill for the Grand President. Our 1-bedroom apt cost 2340 baht per night. We were there for basically three weeks. I do believe you get a bit of a break if you book for a month.

The President Solitaire is a bit newer than Grand President. It is just down the street on soi 11, but a little bit farther from NANA skytrain station from the President. However, I saw a little mini-van type vehicle from the Solitaire taking people to the NANA station from that hotel (I assume that was what they were doing).

Grand President was very clean. Never noticed a bug or gecko in the apt. Now, out on the soi... YES. Vendors were selling the big bugs, and there were a few big cockroaches that had been stepped on along the sidewalk in the morning!

I look forward to Feb or Mar when I will make my next trip to BKK. It's such a great vacation destination.

Simpson 510- Thanks for the information. I might try the place you stayed in or the President Solitaire. I could check into the Chateau de Bangkok by Sofitel, too and get a serviced apartment there. I stayed there for one night just in August. It's quite central...200 meters from Ploenchit skytrain station. A Jr. Suite...hotel room only cost me 1400B and the serviced apartments are quite reasonable...37,968B for a 33 sq.meters...43,146 fro 44 sq.meters ...48,323B for 50 sq.meters.My hotel room had a full kitchenette with an apartment-sized fridge and big microwave and stainless steel sink and counters with lots of cabinet space. It was quite nice. Plus there's a beautiful pool on the roof top overlooking Bangkok and a couple of restaurants in the building. So it's hard to choose. Thanks again! Happy Travels!

Guenmai.... Somchart sckool is dircttly accross from the Grand president.. there are a couple of "something president" apartments on soi 11.. I believe the grand President starts at 26.000 baht a month.. the solitare starts up in the 60.000 range. and is ultra high tech

rhkkmk...
The web site is under construction... STILL. The problem is that the container of stuff came while I was on a 3-week vacation to Australia and south Pacific islands. So... I was a bit delayed in getting everything cataloged so I can put it on the site. I've been working long hours in my "studio" which is in the back room here at our store (warehouse). Some day the site will be up and running, I promise! Hopefully within a month.

orgy7/guenmai: I don't know if 26000 baht will buy a serviced apt at Grand President for a month. You might double that amt...?

isismnroe: Tawandang is open every night, and I am certain the musical "show" is nightly. The weekends get really busy there. It's best to go during the week and arrive early (6ish) so you can get a good table down by the stage. The band/s are excellent! The singers are also very talented. This is a great Thai place. The first time we went, I'm sure we were the ONLY falongs in the place. Now, we see more Amer/Euro types. Word has gotten out about how great it is. Location??? I really couldn't tell you. It's not along the skytrain route. You need to taxi there. Taxis know the way, and there is always a line of them to take folks home after their night of fun, eating, dancing, singing, etc.

Carole, I just wanted to tell you that your posts are incredible and are very helpful. I've made three pages of notes from them for my trip to BKK. I leave November 24th and am very excited. Could you suggest some good lunch places. I've got it covered for dinner. Also how is the weekend market? Thanks Karen.

Hi Karen, not Carol but am chipping in with my 2 bits. Do a serach on this forum for weekend market and u will find some fairly lengthy previous posts on it. Visitors to the wkend market fall in 2 distinct categories - love it or hate it. I am in the former and have got amazing buys there. Bob and others are in the latter. I would def suggest u do not miss the Night Market which is universally considered a great experience. If u go to Chitlom try and have lunch at the food court at Central Chitlom which is amazing. also a lovely Vietnamese place Thang Long on Soi Lung suan. In the Emporium mall an amazing restaurant called Aoi for Japanese - try to reserve a table overlooking ther park near the windows and def order edamame beans.

Karen,
I appreciate the nice comments about my BKK information. Thank you!

I agree that the Central Store at Chitlom has some good places for lunch. The food court on the top floor is very nice! Many choices, and if you go back and read in the last 1/3 of this thread, I've posted something about how they give you a sort of computer card when you enter, and all your foods are scanned onto your card. Very interesting...

I also like Greyhound Cafe for lunch. The Central Store has one on the floor that is connected to the skytrain (2nd or maybe 3rd). There is also a Greyhound at the Emporium. I like their sandwich in a bowl.

I have also had lunch at a little Italian place on the ground floor of Siam Discovery. They have a nice caprese salad and bruchetta.

As far as the weekend market is concerned, I always manage to go there at least once on my trips. There are some amazing bargains there, BUT the place is HUGE, very crowded, and very hot. It is so easy to get lost in all the shuffle! If you can get a good map and try to figure out where you are all the time, that would help.

Carol

That passes for humor in Needham. It's a sleepy little village. Bob won't eat there until they serve McChicken with McCashews.
