Reconfirming flights necessary?
My husband and I are leaving in a week for SE Asia, and have quite a few flights booked, both international and domestic. I am concerned about reconfirming all of these flights, and would like to know how you experienced travellers have handled it. Does it have to be 72 hours in advance, or can it be earlier/later? Our itinerary includes Singapore, Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Saigon - we used the Bangkok Air Discovery Pass for all of them. Any adice would be appreciated, as I would like to enjoy the trip and not be obsessed with calling the airlines constantly! Thanks.

In my experience, airlines in Asia no longer require re-confirmation; however some still do so you need to read the fine print on the ticket or go to the website of the airline. A small regional carrier like Bangkok Air may require it; but I could not get specific information on their website (bangkokair.com). You might want to check or call/fax or e-mail them.

We have our hotels call the airlines to reconfirm even if unnecessary. Really to check to be certain our reservations are there and that the flights are still scheduled. I think that in Siem Reap the reconfirmation was necessary, but I may be mistaken. Never hurts to do it, but let the native speakers do it for you in Cambodia and VietNam. Sounds as if you will have a great trip.

We reconfirm 24-48 hrs prior. Hotels can do. Our return seats to Sydney from HCMC were cancelled by Vietnam airlines and we had to rebook. Our hotel told us it was because we changed our inbound flight and they automatically cancel all other flights when changes are made. WEIRD!

i think this type of cancellation policy is very standard...
bangkok air is fabulous and you will be very pleased with them...they have an office in nyc with an 800 # if that helps you for confirming before you leave---assume you are in usa...maybe a poor assumption...it certainly never hurst to reconfirm, especially in 3rd world countries...

I never reconfirm in Europe, but I must say I try to in Asia. However, I've never had a problem on the (many) occasions when I have not done so. Has anybody had their reservations actually canceled because they didn't reconfirm? I'd be curious to know.

Yes, years ago on Garuda. I was told I didn't have to reconfirm because I was flying business class, but they cancelled my flight because I didn't reconfirm 72 hours in advance.
Now most airlines don't require reconformation, but I always ask, just in case.

Thanks for the advice. I called the Bangkok Air office in Vancouver, Canada and they reconfirmed the first flight, which was my main concern since we'll be in Singapore at the time, and don't get into Bangkok until the day before the flight. The rest of the flights are up to us, but we'll have our hotel handle it.
