While visiting temples, etc in Bangon or anywhere else in Burma...it it okay to wear a dress without sleaves? OR....should I bring along a shawl? I also read that sandals are not acceptable and shoes should be closed and more modest. True? Anything else I should know?

Just came back from Myanmar today and yes it's ok to wear sandals. Most of the local men and women wear sandals since you will have to take off your shoes and socks when entering any religious sites. Don't wear anything too revealing for clothing. T-shirts and pants or dress are fine or you could go local and wear a sarong. Bring lots of wet wipes to clean your feet afterward. You'll love Myanmar!

I went to Myanmar last year wore and sandals all the time. I brought cargo pants t shirts and all the typical travel wear. When I saw how beautiful and feminine the women looked in their sarrongs. I bought some along with solid colored tops with cap sleeve. Although I'm a old gal I'm slender, one local man said I looked like their girls. I wore them for my entire trip.

I would avoid going sleeveless.

I agree with Impacked about how elegant the ladies look in lyongis (sp).

It took a while to find the right style (there are several) for my body type, but once I did I also fell in love with the lyongis. They are very flattering which is a rare experience indeed for me when it comes to non-western clothing. Heck, it's even hard for me to find flattering western clothing.
