Try running a search here, as there have been many threads on the virtues of one over the other. If you can't find anything, then post again, and I will give my opinion.
What time of year are you considering going? Are you a golfer?

I have ran a search and I have found posts of people saying they wouldn't spend the money for the Aman property, and the Banyan Tree is far from the beach, why not stay at the Chedi, etc...but I am committed to one or the other, so I am looking for a comparison.
We don't golf, and we are going in July.

If you have got a deal where the price is the 'same' I would opt for the Amanpuri, better location wise. Both of course are excellent and if you can afford that price then by all means enjoy it, but those prices are like 'off this planet' compared with many other places. One great thing about Thailand is you don't have to spend an absolute fortune for a nice place. As you want to relax in the sun I am certain you would find the Amanpuri more appealing and location wise it is much better if you want to go out for a meal.
Naturally avoid May-October weatherwise. Pity those are the only 2 choices.

Amanpuri's ocean view units are going to be set high on a cliff, with, of course, lovely ocean views.
The Banyan Tree has only two Spa Pool Villas - 1 has a lagoon view (featured on the cover of the Jan. 2003 Conde Naste Traveler!) and one does not. They don't guarantee you one or the other.
If you're like me - a hotel nut - you should spend a few nights at both. Amanpuri, because it is in a quiet area with incredible ocean views and IT IS AN AMAN; and the Banyan Tree, because you may never have a chance to stay at a villa like that again. You also have good access to restaurants and other activities from there.
Enjoy!

I would stay at the Aman, unless you are a golfer which is why I asked. The ambience of the Aman is better than at the Banyan, IMO, which is a much larger hotel. The beach is more secluded and wild, and being on a hill you get the views. There aren't any beach views to speak of at the Banyan, as it is flat.
July will be somewhat rainy, I assume you are aware of this.
