Philippines vs. Thailand
Asked a similar question yesterday about Vietnam. I have been to Thailand and stay in 3 star hotels, use domestic air, taxis and Tuks. Also eat at great restaurants without breaking the bank. Is the Philippines similar to Thailand as far as accommodations, prices and tourist services go? How are the countries the same? How are they different?

I have been to both countries, Bangkok last year and Manila,Philippines this year.
Both are wonderful countries with plenty to do and see. Language- English is more prevalent in PI (Philippine Islands) than in Thailand.
Value for the $$$$- I believe your $ goes much farther in the PI than Thailand.
Tourist infrastructure- better in Bangkok as they have the skytrain/river taxis and their tourism industry is much better organized.
Beaches/resorts- both have world class beaches and resorts.
Thailand has the Tuk Tuk- Manila has its own version- a three wheel motorcycle that can accomodate up to 8 asians (yes you have to see it to believe it). They also have Jeepneys that the locals use. Although you can get around Bangkok with out a car/driver- its advisable to get a car/driver for Manila.
Shopping- great in both countries- I would give the edge to Bangkok as it has many more markets.
Temples/palaces- Bangkok wins hand down.
5/3 Star hotels- Bangkok has the edge here as well in that there are more options in Bangkok.
Food-both have a wide variety of asian cuisine.
Jewelry- precious gems a deal in Bangkok, Pearls a steal in Manila.
Security concerns- PI gets a little more press on this issue however the problems are really in the southern islands, Manila is fine.
Weather- same.
People- warm and friendly- a tie.
My advice- if you have been to Bangkok nTimes- maybe its time for something different- try the PI! (search this forum for my trip report to Manila)

Thailand promotes itself as a tourist destination very well. The Philippines unfortunately does not do a good job. Perhaps it's just as well for tourists like me who'd like to keep the Philippines a secret and keep it "off the beaten path". Like BillT said, since you've seen Thailand, give the Philippines a try. I was so afraid of going there because of kidnappings and terrorist bombings, but after the tsunami last Dec in Thailand and other countries, I figured that if it is time for me to leave this earth, I can be anywhere and death will catch up with me.

Yes I agree- the terrorist issues are exaggerated- its safe in Manila and surrounding areas- the main problem is in the southern islands.
The place is a real bargain, people are friendly, everybody speaks english- but like you said- maybe its a blessing that its not that popular- when it becomes so I suppose the prices will go up on everything! So maybe everybody on this forum should continue going to BKK!
