Passenger Service Charge
Don't think I've ever seen this posted so here's a heads up for first time Thailand travelers. When leaving the country to return home, a 500 Baht per person "Passenger Service Charge and Value Added Tax" is collected before you go to your departure gate. It has to be in Baht, so make sure you keep enought to pay. Don't worry if you don't have any, or even it you're short a few b/c there's a currency exchange counter within sight of the place where you pay the tax. They'll be happy to exchange your own currency to the amount of Baht you need.

these type of charges are in almost every asian country that you visit...its not unique to thailand...it is a departure tax...
in fact many countries have them but i think they are sometimes hidden in the price of your ticket....look at what fees are collected on your usa tickets these days....customs/immigration tax---its the same thing really...

I know that these taxes are universal and are usually included as one of the many taxes and fees included in airline tickets, but it can come as a surprise if you don't realize you need to have the money to get out of the country.

The payment of a 500Baht Departure Fee has been mentioned on any number of threads on this board. Bangkok is a hub city and everytime you pass thru to leave the country, it's 500Baht. When going to Vietnam, Cambodia, when returning to your home country... another 500Baht.
While many countries around the world have now included these departure fees in the price of your airline ticket, there are still those that require this payment in local (some even in USD) when you depart. It's important to verify this so as not to be surprised and to have sufficient funds.

There are several airports in Thailand that operate international flights, Chiang Mai and Phuket for example and at all of these you pay the 500 Baht departure tax.
If you happen to be flying out of Siem Reap you will be charged US$25. make sure you have it with you as it is expensive to buy US$s at the airport.
