New York Times Northern Thailand Article
Just a heads up - check out the article in this Sunday's NY Times Travel section on northern Thailand. I'd provide a link but you have to register anyway so just go to www.nytimes.com and click on "Travel" under "Features".

The title, "Exploring Thailand's Wild North," is irritating because it implies a Wild West atmosphere rather than an area where many citizens are devout Buddhists and dependent in large measure on legitimate agriculture. The author milked exoticism to an extreme, apparently to appeal to adventure travelers. The article was shallow (for example, it did not mention the large Buddhist monastery near downtown) and most of the recommended accommodations are fancy resorts. Do I need to say that I was quite dissatisfied with it? ZZ

ZZ - the article is just one person's perspective and, in my opinion, gives the reader a reasonable glimpse into that area of the world. I did not find it "shallow" at all. There were only three accomodations listed, one of which was a $35/nt hotel. You would find if you spent more time on this board that most prefer the "fancy resorts".
