Frances, virtually every hotel in Bangkok has a pool. Certainly any hotel in that price range will have a pool. If possible, get a rate with breakfast, as the buffet breakfasts at hotels are often in the US$16-20 range. Hotels must charge tax and service on top of the rate, which adds 17.7%.
I recommend using one of the booking services such as www.agoda.com or www.sawasdee.com or www.asiarooms.com AS you can usuallly get much better rates. Most of the time the rates quoted on these sites include breakfast as well as tax and service (but do read the small print to make sure). Also, read the cancellation policy.
Persoanlly, I prefer to stay along the river. There is the endlessly interesting river traffic to watch and you can take the water taxis to the wats along the river. I also find it slightly less hot by the river and feel like the air is cleaner than it is in the canyons of the high rises. You always want to choose a place near the skytrain. If you stay by the river, your hotel will have a shuttle boat to the skytrain station.
