Sorry to not answer your questions but my first thought would be why KL for so long? The obvious may be for business. But, if not, consider going farther afield to places like Penang which, for me, was as memorable as I found KL forgettable.

Regarding internet service & phone service, I would imagine your hotel will have wifi and buy a local sim card for your phone. It should be quite cheap.

KL has some lovely hotels, quite as safe as any other large city. It is a big city and you should exercise the same cautions as you would in any big city.

Like, MmePerdu, I have found KL not very interesting in my several stays there. I also recommend Georgetown, Penang (A World Heritage city) or Kuching, if you want to fly to Malaysian Borneo.

You can buy an inexpensive SIM if you don't have cheap international coverage on your phone.

I was in KL for about 3 days about 10 years ago. I found it very safe and friendly. Just use common sense as you would elsewhere. There was a HOHO bus that took us around to the major sights and we used a taxi to go to Putrajaya. Cab drivers might try to take advantage of you, but we only ran into that problem once. Everyone else was super nice when we asked for directions like lost tourists.
No idea about wifi.

I have spent a lot of time in KL over the years, I like the city, especially the food scene there. However, I do agree with Kathie that you should get out of the city and see what the rest of the country has to offer.

I love sabah and Sarawak on Borneo - v,cheap flights there with Air Asia.

We last visited Penang earlier this year and felt that the place had gone downhill a little from our previous visit two years ago. The interior has a lot to offer, Taman Negara is easily access from KL if you want a Jungle fix.

WiFi is available everywhere in hotels, bars, restaurants. Local SIM cards and plans are cheap if you have an unlocked smartphone or tablet.

Most Asian cities are pretty safe and KL is no exception. Just take the same precautions you hopefully do at home. Is there a particular reason you would think it unsafe?

As we discuss where else she might enjoy, we still don't know if she has any flexibility at all. It would be useful to know, for us and most of all, for her. Is KL the only option?
