Credit this thread to a senior moment. Several years ago we were on a tour to Kanchanaburi that, on the way back, took us to a wat that was really impressive.

It was on a plaza -- a wat within a wat -- you can't go into the wat -- quite a few stairs leading up to the wat from the plaza. It was very near BKK or maybe even in the outskirts.

Is this enough of a description for someone to tell me the name and its location? We would like to see it again in January.

Not really enough here to go on (and your language is really confusing - wat means temple or monastery, but I think you're using it interchangeably with 'building').

The most impressive temple between Bangkok and Kanchanaburi would be the big chedi at Nakorn Pathom, but I don't think of it as having a lot of stairs, and you most definitely can go in (it's rare for a temple to be closed in daylight in Thailand).

Sorry, MichaelBKK -- the tour guide did use the term "wat" for both buildings. I do have some pictures and it looks like a lot of steps to me. Maybe Tong will know when we see her -- particularly if I take a copy of the picture.
