Most affordable places

Someone had suggested visiting Bhutan(which I have heard very little about). After my trip to Thailand in November, I think I will start investigating it. One thing I have noticed is that travel is getting expensive everywhere. I'd like to hear from people who have traveled extensively in Asia. In your opinion, where is the cheapest place to visit(or most affordable). My husband and I really can't afford to travel alot, but we do without a few things so that we can. I love to travel and the world is a big place. Because of limited infrastructure, are places like Bhutan expensive?

Bhutan is rather expensive. You must go with a government -sanctioned guide or tour group, and minimum charges are US$200 per day per person. Air travel in and out of Bhutan is severely limited, so airfares are expensive as well.

Affordable places in Asia? Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia come immediately to mind. VN, Laos and Cambodia are affordable as well. I haven't been to the Philippines, but it is also cited as a very affordable destination.

Bhutan is expensive because of the per day minumim. Elsewhere in Asia can be expensive or cheap, depending on where you stay and how you chose to travel. S.E. Asia is mostly cheap outside Singapore, but China can also be cheap if you don't spend too much time in the east coast cities. In general I find I spend noticeably less in Asia than in Europe.

Myanmar (Burma) is controversial but very inexpensive. We are going there in February - best to solicit other's experiences which have been very positive for the most part. You should be aware that there are people that feel strongly that there are reasons NOT to go - good to listen to others opinions on this also.

We found Bali to be the least expensive and overall most unique and enjoyable travel destination. We spend more than twice what we spend in Bali in Thailand.
